Gitmo Fettishism goes Global

January 11, 2008

A few days ago, Andrew Sullivan posted an account of a guy who decided to waterboard himself, to see if it was actually torture:

At the time my lungs emptied and I began to draw water, I would have sold my children to escape. There was no choice, or chance, and willpower was not involved.

I never felt anything like it, and this was self-inflicted with a watering can, where I was in total control and never in any danger.

And I understood.

It’s torture. No question. Terrible terrible torture. To experience it and understand it and then do it to another human being is to leave the realm of sanity and humanity forever. No question in my mind.

Now, I have to ask, if you can do it to yourself, how can it be called “torture?” Seems like more of a fettish to me.

Well, now, the ACLU is hosting “Wear Orange” Day, today:

To coincide with the six-year anniversary of the arrival of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, the American Civil Liberties Union today announced its Close Guantánamo campaign. The ACLU is hosting more than 20 events across the country this week from Washington, DC to Boise, Idaho. In addition, the ACLU is calling on Americans to wear orange this Friday as an expression of opposition to indefinite detention at the U.S.-run prison and torture. Orange, the color of the jumpsuits worn by the first Gitmo detainees in photographs released by the Department of Defense in 2002, was chosen to represent torture tactics and prisoner abuse…

Now, Michelle Malkin reports that these protests have gone international.

I told you yesterday about the anti-Guantanamo Bay “Wear Orange” campaign scheduled for today. It’s a worldwide event, with anti-American zealots using Gitmo as a pretext to vent all their hatred at our military and our nation–and play dress-up with their orange jumpsuits. They’re demonstrating in Australia, Ireland, the Philippines, Sweden, Ireland, Bahrain, Paraguay, and elsewhere…(more here and here)

Good day to go green!
