Markos, Morality and Michigan

January 12, 2008

The Kos himself, Markos Moulitsas, opines on the Michigan primary with an interesting take. He complains that the GOP has done this very thing before and he doesn’t like it so he wants Michigan Dems to do it now. He wants Dems to crossover and vote for Mitt in the primary because he believes “… if Mitt wins, Democrats win!”

Not to bring up the old “Two wrongs don’t make a right!” argument but I have to wonder about Kos’s morality to advocate a behavior he finds reprehensible. Now I know where the rest of the diarists at Kos get theirs.

Interestingly, here is Kos’ intro to the piece detailing the GOP crossover votes.

In 1972, Republican voters in Michigan decided to make a little mischief, crossing over to vote in the open Democratic primary and voting for segregationist Democrat George Wallace, seriously embarrassing the state’s Democrats. In fact, a third of the voters (PDF) in the Democratic primary were Republican crossover votes. In 1988, Republican voters again crossed over, helping Jesse Jackson win the Democratic primary, helping rack up big margins for Jackson in Republican precincts. (Michigan Republicans can clearly be counted on to practice the worst of racial politics.) In 1998, Republicans helped Jack Kevorkian’s lawyer — quack Geoffrey Feiger — win his Democratic primary, thus guaranteeing their hold on the governor’s mansion that year.

Let’s see - we have George Wallace, a “segregationist” (read racist SOB); Jesse Jackson, (read master manipulator and shakedown artist), and; Geoffrey Feiger, quack and Jack Kevorkian’s attorney (that’s all I have to say about that) on the ballot. The Dems allowed these men to be on the ballot under their party affiliation. But it’s the GOP that then “seriously (embarrassed) the state’s Democrats”, “… clearly … practiced the worst of racial politics” and “guaranteed their hold on the governor’s mansion”.

As much as I condemn any GOP involvement in any sort of crossover vote, I’m not ignorant enough to buy into the lie that the GOP is responsible. If the Dems didn’t want those men to be on the ballot as Democrats for the electorate to be able to vote for then they should have been adult enough to refuse them permission to run as Dems or disassociated themselves from their campaigns. That they did not only tells me they were proud to associate themselves with them and that they should have welcomed any GOP voter that crossed over as belonging to the group of Republicans that Mrs. Clinton recently described as “Republicans who have seen the light.”

One wonders how Kos got to be as big as it is with this sort of tortured reasoning.
