Romney the candidate of socialized medicine?
January 31, 2008
Todd Zuccato just rocked out a shocking post about his decision to vote for McCain.Todd says his decision is based almost solely on his fear of socialized medicine and Romney’s possible support of it.
Looks like we are down to two options for the Republican nominee, Romney and McCain. I’m not exactly excited about either, but if I had to choose, it would be Romney. From the title, you know there is a but coming right?
Well, here it is. Of all the issues that will be presented to the next president, there is one that scares the hell out of me; socialized medicine, regardless of what the democrats call it. If we assume for a minute that the dems remain in control of the both the house and senate, I am pretty certain they will draft some sort of a socialized medicine bill. To be honest, I’m scared to dealth Romney would sign it, based on his history.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of bills McCain could sign that would be ugly. I think most of the boneheaded things McCain would do would be reversable. Socialized medicine would not, at least not easily. As our history has shown, regardless of how bad an entitelment is, they never get taken away once the are given out. Correct me if you think I’m wrong here.
Anyone else have this concern?

Nah, Mitt’s been pretty clear - as recently as the debate last night - that his program is summed up thus: either your buy private insurance or if you don’t like government compulsion, you self-fund an HSA to cover your health care. That’s how auto insurance works in Illinois - it’s required, but you’re not buying it from the state. The way the current system is set up, the self-governing among us are penalized by carrying those who don’t manage their risk appropriately; his plan fixes that, even if only somewhat.
If anything, ask yourself this, and recall the Harriet Miers debacle: which guy is more likely to give the conservative base the finger if they raise hell about something stupid he’s doing, McCain or Romney? Say what you want about Bushie - Lord knows I have - but at least he doesn’t have an obvious dislike for the base of his party, and he listened when the base spoke up.
That angry old man (yes, he’s a hero, and God bless him for his service…) would be the worst choice for the party, hands down. Again, I’ve yet to hear a single McCain supporter answer the indictments against McCain (which are too many to enumerate at this point).

Todd’s logic has to be some kind of kitsch….right? Romney is clearly the most conservative of the two, but yet he would pull for McCain because of something Romney “might” do down the road…what about something McCain might do that’s worse than some of the votes he’s made in the Senate already, huh? McCain’s churlish behavior and arrogance reminds me more and more of Bush himself, and I’ve had enough of him.
No, you have to go for the best candidate you have at the time and hope for the best.
