A Digg Request: Digg Widgets!

Digg WidgetAs Digg grows more with each new day, many users, including myself, are looking for ways to better network with friends and content. I propose the Digg Widget to help do just that.

But first…

Jeremiah Hoyet has an excellent post called “Will Digg’s Growth Affect The Community?” over on his blog, reeverb.

Having been a Digg user for almost two years now, I have seen the community change and grow with my own two eyes. I have been around since there were 200,000 users, Digg 3.0 release, Top User page removal, and their recent announcement of hitting 1 million registered users. The changes have been rough at times, but some things were for the better of the community, but oddly enough, I feel the growth beyond 1 million users will affect the community the most in the future.

I haven’t been around Digg quite that long, but I’m coming up on 7 months, so I’m no NOOB. I, too, have seen some drastic growth spurts take place. Like Jeremiah, I remember when Digg pulled the top user list. At first I thought it was a bad thing, but now I see far more users having influence on the system, which is a good thing.

However, as Jeremiah points out, finding stories is becoming a daunting task.

Digg is an open site, with a large amount of content for one user to digest. The amount of stories submitted in one day can range anywhere from two to ten thousand - that’s a lot to digest for a single user. If the shear amount of content 1 million registered users can generate isn’t enough, Digg doesn’t offer very many options at navigating this content effectively. The only navigation offered by Digg is the categories, which serve as a broad, general idea of the kind of content you will find inside the category.

I personally like a specific grouping of content. Having a friends list helps me get to it quicker, because I usually add friends based on content that I like to read. This helps sort through the clutter because my friends are usually Digging stories that match my preferences. But building an influential network is now much more difficult that it once was.

Now, there needs to be a LOT of changes throughout Digg’s system to keep up with the pace of growth, which I’m sure Digg is working on. But I have an idea that I would LOVE to see come into play… Digg Widgets.

Digg Widgets

It would be a huge help to have a Digg widget in the sidebar of my blogs that links to my “friends page”. Or at least, pulls data from that document. This would generate awareness to my network, and tell me more about the network/s of the site/s I visit.

Features could include
:
-Latest stories Dugg from friends list
-Number of Digg’s those stories received
-Link to friends page
-Link to Digg profile

This little tool would be a win win for everyone! My visitors would know what my network is Digging, I would know what my network is Digging, and Digg would probably be getting a LOT more traffic than it now sees.

It may be a bomb of an idea, but it seems like a decent thought.

What say you?

That’s pretty close to what I had in mind, but it looks like it only pulls from categories. Is there any way to have it actually get down and personal with user networks?

Like, for example, latest submissions or Diggs from a users friends?

You could do this pretty easily with the RSS feeds of stories your friends have dugg. Just parse that feed via PHP/Ruby/Python/etc. and show it in the sidebar. You could also just set up a proxy and proxy the RSS to an AJAX request from your webpage.

Here’s the RSS feed for stories my friends have dugg for instance:
    http://www.digg.com/friends/joestump/digs.xml

    Hope that helps :)

Better yet - how about all new diggs posted on Twitter?

You are running Wordpress. Just drag an RSS widget (comes with the widgets plugin!) into the sidebar, and give it this address:

    http://digg.com/friends/YOUR_DIGG_NAME_/digs.xml

Done. Everything you and your friends have dugg appears in your sidebar.

Virtually all the pages on digg have an RSS feed. Just use those and drop them right into the RSS widgets. Problem solved.

    Otto,

I realize RSS is very possible, but I’m looking for a bit more in functionality.

    Thanks for stopping by though!

We’ll get right on building out your widget!

While our RSS reader has been used to track Digg quite a lot, nobody has build out the exact widget you are talking about that lets you track and interact with the diggs that you are reading.

Try downloading and “docking” our reader to the side of your screen… you might be surprised at how much it might answer your needs.

Hi. I wrote a digg widget a couple weeks ago that uses the official digg javascript. You can download it here:

I wrote the widget in response to a request by another digg user. If you didn’t read the original post, the widget displays a list of articles recently dugg by your friends.
