….. BUT I FIRED THE STUPID PARTY IN 2006
I wholeheartedly concur with this recent column by Chuck Muth:
http://conservablogs.com/muthstruths/2007/04/25/bye-bye-gop/
Personally, I made my decision early last year. I decided to sit out the 2006 election and all future elections until and unless the following occurs:
1) Bush or a senior Repub leader publicly apologizes to the Minutemen for calling them “vigilantes”, and
2) Bush or another Repub president vetoes JUST ONE *#@$&% spending bill
I’m still waiting …..
Can any conservative honestly call the above 2 conditions “setting the bar too high” ???
Barring that, I will wait for a true conservative party to come on the scene or for the Republican Party (which I refer to as The Stupid Party) to seriously reform themselves. Overall, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Republicans are far better off as a principled minority party. The country is better off with the Repubs being a burr under the Dem saddle (and creating federal gridlock).
(I should mention that while voting for “None of the Above” is a legitimate act of protest, voting for The Evil Party [Democratic] is NOT IMHO; at least not if one cares about this country’s future. And I gave up on the Libertarian Party when it became clear to me that their preferred response to 9/11 was to “serve papers and issue arrest warrants.”)
But over the years, I’ve become SICK of Republicans pissing on true conservatives and telling them it’s raining. The fact of the matter is that conservative ideals and principles (as a whole) fared no better (at best) under George Bush than under Bill Clinton. THAT is absolutely intolerable; the Repubs controlled the House, Senate AND Presidency for the first time in 50 years and allowed themselves to become drunk with power. When I compare how our ideals fared as a principled minority party when Clinton was in power (being a burr under Clintons saddle) vs. how we did with Repubs controlling everything, I saw:
- Big Government – Worse (how many fed agencies were eliminated or at least cut back ??)
- Taxes – A bit better
- Education - Worse: Teaming up with Ted Kennedy and the NEA instead of pushing vouchers and real choice ?!?!
- Fed regulations – Tied at best
- Energy – Worse: Look at ANWR - House Republican “leaders” have been far too timid on both ANWR and allowing states to authorize oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. So much for conservative “principles.”
- Supreme Court – Better (I’ll overlook the Harriett Miers fiasco)
- Illegal immigration – FAR Worse. Calling the Minutemen “vigilantes”?!? And it took 6 years (until 2006) to finally get around to utilizing the National Guard (nowhere near enough troops anyway) on the border?? And 6 years to build an inadequate border fence?? I consider both to be inadequate crumbs that the Repubs threw out to the conservative masses because it was an election year. Far too little and too late.
- Entitlement Reform – Worse. Bush and our Congressional “leadership”, timidly allowed the Dems to demagogue Social Security reform to death without a peep from them !!
- Term Limits - Whatever happened to them ?? I refuse to support any politician who won’t endorse them. It’s painfully obvious that entitlements will NEVER be reformed without the cover of term limits to make the increasingly difficult choices ahead.
- Tort Reform Anyone ???? - Oh, wait, we can’t have that. It might upset John Edward$ and other trial lawyer$.
- Spending, deficit – FAR, FAR worse. Good Grief, not a single spending bill has been vetoed by this “conservative” President !!!! His only veto (Sep 2006) was to oppose federal funding of stem cell research ?!?! That opposition is justified ……… but that issue is about #47 on my list of importance. Our country is facing dire threats on several fronts, but “federal funding of stem cell research’ is NOT one of those threats.
“Earmarks” also exploded during Repub control. In addition, not vetoing the energy bill (or ANY bill) was bad enough. But then Bush draws a line in the sand in 2005 on the Transportation Bill, the Repub controlled Congress ignored him and added an additional $30 billion more, and then Bush signs the bill anyway ?!?! Right now I would argue that spending, the deficit and uncontrolled entitlements are as much a threat to destroy the US as Al Qaeda or more liberals on the Supreme Court. A “little” careless spending is destroying this country and Repubs have been throwing gasoline instead of water on the fire. And to top it off, early last year (a critical election year), conservatives NEEDED the election of a solid conservative, John Shadegg, to House Majority Leader. Instead we got John “Status Quo” Boehner. Another excuse for conservatives to stay home in November.
- Last, but not Least - The War on Terror – Mixed: Taking the fight overseas was a plus ………. But the nauseating politically correct way we are fighting the war is a big minus (if the Dems were in power conservatives would be SCREAMING about giving copies of the Koran to maggots in Gitmo, and allowing Moussaoui to make a circus of our legal system for over 4 years at taxpayer expense). Also we had a chance to kill Al Sadr in Iraq a few years ago and instead let this “holy man” live (apparently so that the world wouldn’t hate us). Now he has tens of thousands of brownshirts doing his dirty work (and BTW this guy is no more a “holy man” than Himmler was).
And Iran continues to finance the blood-letting of OUR troops in Iraq and we’ve done NOTHING - - Iran has not paid a nickel for having the blood of US servicemen on their hands. We’ve also given almost no support for the 6-7 Iranian resistance groups. Helping them establish an Iranian government in exile is long overdue. We need to be a VERY painful thorn in the backside of Iran …….. but we’re apparently afraid that the French and the Democrats might get upset
And on the anniversary week of Sept. 11 — on 9-11-06 the State Department allows Mohammed Khatami, former president of Iran, the pre-eminent state sponsor of terrorism, into the United States. Khatami, who supports Hezbollah and the destruction of Israel, spoke on the eve of Sept. 11 at Harvard on (get this) ‘Ethics of Tolerance in the Age of Violence.’ This brownshirt should have been arrested the moment he set foot in the US.
And on Iraq, the time to take the gloves off and deliver some hellfire and brimstone was when those 2 American soldiers were tortured and killed by Islamic vermin a year ago. But Bush changed nothing. Carpe diem should have been the mantra then (if not right after 9-11). The opportunity was lost both times. Instead of Bush in this War on Terror, we need someone who will be ruthless enough ……… we need “Bush +++” (and unfortunately the Dems offer no serious alternative; they only offer “Bush Lite”).
Finally, related to the War on Terror, Norman Mineta (Secretary of Transportation from 2001-2006) refused to implement reasonable profiling at US airports after 9/11 (comparable to what Israel does). He should have been fired on the spot. Because he wasn’t, to this day we continue to harass innocent passengers while looking for weapons when we should instead be looking for terrorists (the successful way that Israel operates).
In any event, the US will not get serious about this war until after a US city is incinerated. 3000 US citizens dead is apparently not enough irregardless of which party is in power. It will take a million dead.
Sorry ……. but I’m fed up with The Stupid Party using MY vote as proof that they have a “mandate” to continue the above crap. If they want my vote, let the bastards earn it !!

Jeez Smitty!
Why don’t you tell us how you really feel??!!
Great post. I especially like the comparison and issues rundown. It helps one to remember exactly what government is doing and has done as opposed to merely remembering what they promised.
I, too, am fed up with the GOP. I’ve heard all the arguments that giving the Dems power by sitting out the election is bad because then the Dems will wield power. My response has always been what you’ve posted about here.
If the GOP can show me how the country is different and better under their leadership than the Left’s, I’ll consider voting for them again. But as long as the GOP is indistinguishable from the Jackasses, what difference does it make how I vote?
Thus, I’ll sit it out unless and until the GOP puts up a Conservative candidate. You’d think it’d be a no-brainer for them but you’d be wrong!
Thanks again for the great post. I think this one will make the Carnival.

[…] One of my favorite Conservabloggers, Smitty at Laissez-Faire, has a great post on the wayward path the GOP has taken over the last decade and the price they’re paying for it today. Titled ‘I Tip My Hat to Chuck Muth’ and subtitled ‘But I Fired the Stupid Party in 2006′, Smitty offers his evaluation of how the GOP has governed during the Bush Administration as compared to the Clinton years. Topics covered include Taxes, Education, Tort Reform, Spending and more.
