The Problem with Israel

January 12th, 2009 Posted in Politics, Foreign Policy, Israel

One can understand why the Jewish majority wants an explicitly Jewish state, but why should America enthusiastically support a foreign government explicitly arrayed against equal rights for everyone else?  Although Israel purports to be a democracy, it reportedly is preparing to outlaw an Arab political party campaigning for equal rights.

Reports Antiwar.news:

The Central Elections Committee is expected to vote on Balad’s ban tomorrow, and with the ruling Kadima Party on board it seems likely to pass. Kadima says that though it supports giving the Arab minority “due representation,” the Israeli government has an obligation to defend itself from Balad who “is trying to undermine Israel’s identity as a Jewish state.”

Why should the U.S. offer unconditional support to a government which so attacks America’s deeply held ideals?
