The Reagan Revolution version 2007
13 May 2007Time for a little history lesson….
In 1975, conservatives were clamoring for a candidate to run against the current incumbant, President Gerald Ford. Ford had not been elected to office, and had not been able to stabilize the fallout from Watergate. Waiting in the wings was Ronald Reagan, making his weekly radio commentaries that inspired young conservatives imaginations. Their excitement only grew from their frustration that former Governor Reagan had yet to announce. By July of that year, the whispers had turned into pleas for Reagan to run.
Reagan would eventually come the closest to knocking a sitting President out of the primaries in the 20th century.
The difference between then and now? There is no sitting President.

Similarities, yes. Parralels, not exactly. I strongly support a Thompson candidacy. But this “second-coming of Reagan” thing is driving me up the wall! There will never be another Reagan. Adhering to the strong conservative principals that Reagan founded and fortified can make us all Reagans if lead correctly. The differences of the past and present times are what strike the contrasts of Ronald Reagan (post presidency ‘75 & ‘80) and Fred Thompson today. An economy in the tank, and deep moral disparity on the heels of Watergate, the fall of Vietnam and the Iranian Hostage Crisis were the catalysts for Reagan. Compare that to a strong and steady economy today and stronger defense, what leadership we expect to see in Thompson is a pull out of the quicksand we accidentally turned into with the election of a defeatist Democratic congress and reinstae the proper direction and a sense of purpose. Fred Thompson to his his own credit is, and as well should be, uniquiely his own man and style of leader. Thompson is the kind of leader, that, (to cliche’ a movie scene) needs to grab America by the collar, slap her in the face and say “What are you thinking? Get a hold of yourself!”

I personally hate the comparisons too. The original post was all in good fun. I wasn’t comparing them as men and their policies. I was only pointing out the similarities in the conservative dissatisfaction that we are witnessing today, and the feelings they were going through then. 1976 almost saw a challenger overtake a sitting President. Right now, we don’t have a sitting President standing in our way. We are not at the disadvantage that Reagan was at then.

Oh, believe me, I know where you were coming from. About the blogosphere you’ve seen the numerous Reagan comparisons. That has to be a tremendous compliment to Fred. As for when he announces, (and he will) I believe this will occur after the “Law & Order” season and soon after the HBO run of “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”. The legalities of equal time and freezing over 100 episodes for 18 months must be a nightmare to iron out. But I believe Thompson can pull it off!

Amen to that
