Some Plain Speaking Facts…
5 November 2007I don’t necessarily like going after other Republicans, but there is a time when retaliation is fully rational, and when one wants to call out Thompson, they can expect to be dealt with…
Some Plain Speaking Facts
Here are some plain facts and punditry about Governor Mike Huckabee’s record in Arkansas, who decided to attack Senator Fred Thompson this morning. My gloves are now free to come off, and I think it is time we shed some more light on the Governor’s record. According to Phyllis Schafly, the president of the National Eagle Forum, Huckabee,” “destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and left the Republican Party a shambles.” Does this make you wonder what Huckabee did to deserve this type of criticism? Let’s look at some of the facts…
Let’s look at Huckabee’s record on immigration:
>“Another bill in the draft stages, backed by Gov. Mike Huckabee, would make illegal aliens eligible for state-funded scholarships and in-state tuition if they graduate from high school in Arkansas.” (Laura Kellams, “Senators research U.S. law on aliens,” Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 1/27/05)
In 2005, Huckabee was quite vocal in his opposition to strengthen citizen verification procedures for employers and voting and cut off public assistance to illegal immigrants. He even went as far as describing the plan as “race baiting.” Huckabee said “Companies controlled by overseas corporations could feel they are unwanted in Arkansas if the Legislature approves an immigration measure now before it.” He described it as “inflammatory, race-baiting… demagoguery.” The bill forbade public assistance and voting rights to illegal immigrants. The Governor also went as far as to say, “(The Bill) inflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there’s a real problem… But there’s not.”
Also in 2005, Huckabee opposed a raid on illegal immigrants in an Arkansas poultry plant. Huckabee said that he was “not afraid of risking his political future by speaking out against a recent immigration raid at an Arkadelphia poultry plant even though calls to his office have been ‘about 1,000 to one’ against his (Huckabee’s) stance…” Huckabee even called on the Bush administration to investigate the circumstances of the raid.
Now, its quite apparent Huckabee was to the left of even George W. Bush on immigration while in office. What about on other issues? Well, his problems with fiscal conservatives have been well documented. By now, everyone knows about his career grade of a “D” from the CATO Institute (the same grade another former Arkansas Governor received… Bill Clinton), and most know about his problems with the Club for Growth. So, has Huckabee just been given the short end of the stick? 21 tax increases went into effect, increasing tax revenue by almost $890 million under Governor Huckabee. These increases include the income tax, the sales tax, a cigarette tax, and a gas tax. Not only did he raise taxes, spending “more than doubled under Huckabee. “During Huckabee’s 10 years as governor, state spending more than doubled, from $6.6 billion to $16.1 billion in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006.”
Now one can see why Huckabee was quick to jump on Thompson… He has no record to stand on. He would be wise not to be so quick to criticize someone who has a record to stand on.
