Per a press release yesterday from Duncan Hunter’s camp, the House of Representatives passed and sent to the Senate a bill that would strip previously approved funding for the border fence which performed so well in Southern California. The legislation, the Secure Fence Act, was originally authored by Hunter and the portion of the fence constructed in Southern California performed beyond expectations.

“Now is the time when those who take the threat to our nation’s borders seriously stand up and be counted,” said Hunter. “Last year, Congress successfully passed legislation that mandated a double fence requirement based on the success of the border fence we’ve built in San Diego. The Democrat majority in this Congress has taken it upon themselves to overturn federal law to pursue a policy that does nothing but harm our border enforcement capabilities. This is not leadership, it is irresponsibility.

H.R. 2764, a bill that provides funding for several federal departments and agencies, was brought to the House floor and passed late last evening by the Democratic leadership. Not only does the bill contain provisions removing all specific locations as outlined by the Secure Fence Act, it also removes all requirements to construct any fencing or physical barriers along the border. This action basically repeals the Secure Fence Act and undermines past efforts to secure our nation’s border.

The Tennessee delegation voted along party lines with one exception. Lincoln Davis, representing the 4th District, was the only Tennessee Democrat to vote against the measure which passed the full House 241-178 on what was, for all intents and purposes, a party line vote.

For those of us here in Middle Tennessee, it means that Jim Cooper - D, the current 5th District Representative voted for the measure. He voted for defunding the fence. He voted to overturn previously passed legislation and to strip previously approved funding that would help to secure our nation’s borders. Given that one of our nation’s hot buttons has been and remains what to do about illegal immigration, Cooper and the rest of the Democrats have made their position plain. And it would appear they are on the wrong side of the fence on this one, pun intended.

But maybe not … Perhaps it’s just that they’re struggling to pay for the pork they just passed and sent to the President …
