Democratic Delegates needed to win: 2,025 Clinton (357) - Obama (287)
10:20PM CST - CA numbers are coming in and McCain is up big! But there are a zillion more votes to tabulate. The spread is unlikely to hold up but we’ll see.
9:50PM CST - MO, GA and TN are all called for Huck! ND goes to Mitt!
9:40PM CST - CNN calls AZ for McCain. It took awhile and the numbers are not overwhelming but it’s a ‘W’!
9:35PM CST - CNN calls AL for Huck and MN for Obama. Huck is pulling away (slowly) in TN and maintaining his lead in GA, and MO. This could be interesting.
9:20PM CST - CNN calls KS for Obama. Fox calls UT, CT and ND for Obama and UT for Romney. Nothing particularly surprising. What’s getting interesting is Huckabee’s showing in MO, TN and GA. In all three states, he’s come from behind and overtaken McCain. This will bode well for him as the night goes on and particularly after tonight. If Romney fails to take hold as it appears he is doing, then from here on, it will be fascinating to see the answer to the question everyone has been asking all night. If Romney is not in the race, which way do his voters break? Do they go to McCain or do they go to Huck?
8:50PM CST - CNN calls MA and NJ for Mrs. Clinton. What’s most interesting is that Obam had the endorsement of both Senators Kerry and Kennedy and the newly elected Gov. of Massachussetts. But Hillary is kicking butt in Boston where she gained the endorsement of the city’s mayor. that will prove to be the difference.
8:25PM CST - CNN calls NY for McCain. While McCain cannot wrap up the nomination tonight, the pundits are starting to use words like “marching” and “inexorable”. Meanwhile, he still doesn’t have much over 40% of the vote in any state. And one panelist used the term “Anti-McCain vote” to describe votes for Huck and Mitt. Bill Bennett offered an insightful anecdote. In late May he had been the emcee at a NY state GOP function. The place was all Rudy! The only other GOP candidate that bothered to show up was McCain and he seemed to cut a lonely figure. Tonight, McCain gets all of NY’s 101 delegates.
8:15PM CST - McCain has to be happy with his IL numbers. It’s the first time he’s been seeing numbers above 50%. Previously his numbers have been no highre than 40% reflecting the deep divide among GOP voters. Will the 50%+ hold up as the night goes on? We’ll see …
8:11PM CST - NJ goes to Mrs. Clinton to the dismay of the Obama camp. That is tempered somewhat by Obama’s expected win in IL.
8:05PM CST - Fox calls DE for Obama.
8PM CST - Fox Calls NY for Mrs. Clinton.
7:45PM CST - The numbers are not looking good for Gov. Romney. He’s only won his home state so far (projected) and he is not leading in any others. For many of the states he’s not winning, he’s in third place behind Huck. Obviously the numbers are still new but it ain’t looking good.
7:35PM CST - Fox calls DE for McCain. 7:45 - CNN concurs.
7:30PM CST - As expected, Mrs. Clinton and Mike Huckabee win the state of AR.
7:10PM CST - CNN’s and (especially) Fox News’ graphics are horrid. Difficult to follow and scrolling weirdly! But Fox News just called TN for Mrs. Clinton and AL for Huck. CNN called NJ for McCain.
7PM CST - Based on exit polls, CNN calls CT and IL for McCain and MA for Mitt. Obama takes IL and Mrs. Clinton takes OK. In GA, Huck comes from 2nd place to pass McCain.
6:55PM CST - Unable to wait for the polls to close **sigh** Fox News calls AL for Obama. +65 for Barack! UPDATE - Ooops… looks like a graphics malfunction … AL now back in the “No Winner” category.
6:30PM CST CNN reporting that GA totals with just a few precincts in, McCain 36%, Romney 30%, Huckabee 27%, Paul 6%.
6:05 CST CNN concurs on GA for Obama.
6PM CST - As soon as the polls closed in GA, Fox News called the Democratic primary for Obama. + 103 for Obama. GOP is basically a 3 way tie so far. Stay tuned …
Fox News is reporting that it may be tomorrow before we know the real results of California’s primary due to the high number of ballots in the mail. Folks are furiously counting but the process is slow. Stay tuned …
OK - I suppose I stand corrected. A commenter noted that Ron Paul actually garnered 3 of WV’s 18 delegates. He promptly brokered them away to Huckabee and that put Huck over the top. Perhaps that’s the backroom deal Romney is complaining about. I’m not smart enough to figure out where Dr. Paul’s 3 delegates should actually be credited - to Paul or to Huck? Since the good Dr. gave them away, I’m leaving them in Huck’s totals, but Ron Paul had them briefly. His website says so.
With Michigan and Florida stripped of any primary influence by the Democrats for the sin of seeking primary influence, Chris Bowers says a brokered convention for the Dems is all but a foregone conclusion. H/T to Eric at Fresh Vision Media.
Huckabee draws first blood! AP reports Mike Huckabee wins all 18 West Virginia delegates. Thinking is that McCain defectors broke to Huck and not Romney. H/T to Media Lizzy. Huckabee got 52% of the vote and Romney pulled in 47% per CNN. That’s 99%! Where’s McCain? Might this be a long night for the AZ Senator?
