Yesterday, NewsComa broke a story about a GOP staffer who Forwarded an email containing a picture which she found racist and offensive. She broke the story at 10AM and, according to the timeline posted over at Silence Isn’t Golden, with a little help from the Lefty blogosphere, “in the span of about six to six and a half hours, everyone knows just how much racism exists within the TNGOP.” Big press from the Left on Right wing racism!

At the same time that story was breaking, in what can only be seen as a historic case of irony, a Democratic staffer sent an email that was even worse.

Titled “Smiles for Monday”, this email made fun of Racism:

Child Abuse:

The Elderly and Aging:

and the Mentally Handicapped.

There’s more, of course, with vulgar language (including a couple of **F** bombs), quasi-nudity, and the Left’s puzzling fascination with Nazis.

What remains to be seen is whether the Left in Tennessee, and nationally, is willing to take a stand against Racism in Principle or show themselves merely interested in exploiting Racism by Party.

Will Lefty bloggers condemn this Democrat and call for his firing? Will the Media cover this on the news like they did the story of the GOP staffer? Will the Left police their own? Will this be written up and front paged at Daily Kos, Wonkette, and Think Progress? And what will the TNDP do? Will Chip Forrester lead the way and not merely call for the firing of this staffer but fire first and comment later?

I’d like to think there would be an identical response from the Left to this event. But I’m a realist. I have no doubt those on the Left with integrity and character will come out against this Democrat just as they did against the Republican. But I hold no hope anything approaching the howling multitudes on the Left calling for the head of a GOP employee will bother to clean up their own stable and remove the beam from their own eye. I guess the next six and a half hours will show us just how much Racism exists in the TNDP, won’t it?

Blue Collar Muse

UPDATE:  It’s 11:00 AM - emails sent out to several other Right of Center bloggers in Tennessee.

UPDATE: It’s a little after 11AM.  Other bloggers start posting it up.  Most of them get the point of my post.  What is the Left and the TNDP going to do about this?  Is their outrage partisan or principled? See comments for the initial responses.

UPDATE: It’s around Noon and the first confirmation of the email is coming out.  Southern Beale, a popular Left wing blogger, admits she received the email in question.  And Post Politics picks up the story.

UPDATE: The story hits Nashville is Talking!  Christian Grantham correctly reports the email came from a staffer from Karen Camper’s (D - Memphis) office.  Since we’re than close, let’s jump the timeline and report that the staffer in question is Blake P Graves.

UPDATE: Graves, too, realized his email may have been a bad idea.  Shortly after he sent it, he sent the distribution list the following under the Subject “So sorry about that last email”, “Everyone, please excuse that e-mail I sent, I totally missed the words used in it. So please accept my apologies for that e-mail. Nonetheless, have a great Monday!”  Since the entire email was just pictures, one can conclude that Graves was unconcerned with the message communicated by the pictures he sent, but was concerned only that the language included in the text on the pictures might be found offensive to some.  He says he “totally missed the words used” in the pictures?  Excuse me?  How is that even possible, let alone a valid defense.  That sounds like “I didn’t read the bill but I voted for it anyway!”  Good heavens!!

UPDATE @ 14:31 - Buzz in the blogosphere is that Graves is “just an intern”.  The point presumably being that Interns should not be taken seriously or held accountable or that things done by lower level functionaries, you know - like 20 year secretaries,  aren’t actionable.  Obviously most of those calling for the head of the GOP staffer believe only that GOP missteps should lead to tumbles.  They are wrong.  Beyond that, they seem also wrong about Graves’ status at the General Assembly.  His title is “Temporary Legislative Assistant”.  According to my sources, all interns ceased to be active on the Hill a month or so ago.  Only full time state employees remain.  Roger Abramson and Left Wing Cracker are wrong.  The “Temporary” in his title does not refer to a “Temp” as in a Temp Employment Service.  It means he does not yet have a permanent location.  He is filling in “temporarily” at Rep. Camper’s office covering a vacation or an illness or something of the sort.  But his title of “Temporary Legislative Assistant” makes him a full time state employee.  As to his politics, you decide.  At his FaceBook page, he lists himself as Politcally Liberal.

Yes, but the problem with your analogy is that those pictures in this email are actually funny. If the Obama thing were funny but racist, then (at least for me) the whole issue would be different. I can see where one forwards a funny racist thing against Obama, and the only reason not to do so would be your desire to be PC, or not to fan racism. But the only reason to forward a non-funny racist Obama thing is racism.

To reiterate, I am not saying that the Obama email is not funny because it is insensitive or shocking or whatever — it is just that there is no joke there, except “a black guy is president.” OK . . . still waiting for the punchline. At least the “barack the magic negro” thing was a parody of a popular song, which entails some humor.

    @ Left Wing Cracker -

All in good time, my friend. We have a timeline to follow.

Some Racism is more Racist than other Racism? I appreciate your take on that.

I don’t recall you quibbling about the level or quality of Racism displayed in the work done by the peeps you don’t like.

Or did I miss that part where you opposed the GOP Racism but gave it a pass because it didn’t involve burning crosses?

  6. Blue Collar Muse (295 comments) says:

    @ JDNash -

Interesting take. Racism is OK as long as it is actually funny. Hrmmm …

People laughed at Letterman’s jokes about Sarah and Willow Palin, does that make them acceptable in your eyes?

I find it equally telling that someone might actually find such things funny than that such humor is or is not acceptable to them based on whether or not they found it funny.

By your logic, the GOP pic both was and was not Racist, depending on whether or not one laughed at it.

But that tends to be in line with the situational ethics reasoning that marks a great deal of thought from the Left.

Thank you for your diligence in bringing this to light. I posted a couple of times at Michael Silence’s blog on the Goforth posts there, pointing out that the self-same liberals that were just shaking with the outrage over it all were mostly dead silent while many, many conservative people have been attacked viciously by the left, giving specific examples.

Not surprisingly, liberals kept to their usual childish level of discourse and proceeded to call me a racist, a liar, a whiner … yet not one word to refute what I said, or even to try to excuse the actions of those such as Letterman or Playboy.

I see that even here they refuse to confront the actual issue without names, without proof … making paltry excuses because the Goforth picture wasn’t as funny as these are - which makes ugly attacks like this less disgusting?

Now that you have satisfied one of the main demands and provided a name, it will be interesting to see how these folks deal with it - like grown ups, or like the childish moral retards that they are.

Hang in there … and good work!

  27. captainkona (2 comments) says:

Those “jokes” are as stupid as any. Though mild compared to the Goforth Image.

The only thing I have a problem with is the author’s apparent inability to distinguish between “Left” and “Democrat”.

Don’t blame Liberals for the idiocy of a Blue Dogshit Democrat. They are not us.

  29. Blue Collar Muse (295 comments) says:

    @ CaptainKona -

A Centrist? This really is your first visit, isn’t it …

  30. JDNash (2 comments) says:

    Blue Collar Muse,

    Re your post #6:

I never said that racism is OK if it is funny. I said that there is not necessarily moral equivalence there, and my moral outrage meter is not an on/off switch. I would not forward either of those emails.

Nevertheless, the point that I was attempting to make was that there is a difference between (1) forwarding a joke based on traditional comedy elements that is at the expense of a minority group and (2) forwarding a “joke” in order to make a point about a minority group (e.g., someone like that should not be president). You may think that both are irredeemable, but my point is that they are different, and I cut more slack to the former category.

The pics in this new email are very different from each other in this new email.

Pic 1: This comes by far the closest to being analogous to the Obama thing. But this is based on a traditional comedy staple – the idea that accents of all kinds ( southern, northern, urban, waspy, Canadian, non-native speaker) are funny. I don’t find that comedy particularly funny, because I don’t usually find physical humor very funny, but it is nonetheless a comedy staple. I am open to the argument that this one of the four is irredeemable, it is not based on any idea along the lines that Asians are bad, or that they should not be appearing in public, or that they should not be president.

Pic. 2: This one is not objectionable. This does not make fun of parents or parenting, or any group (except perhaps unruly kids). It expresses frustration with raising children in a “wouldn’t if be great if . . .” way. I suspect that you do not have kids, or you have very thin skin if you truly find this one offensive.

Pic. 3: Yes, it is comedy at the expense of old people with Alzheimer’s, but it is still funny for reasons that are only tangentially related to the fact that the person is old/ill. There is a set up, a twist, and you have to figure it out, and then you “get it.” Look my grandmother died of alzheimer’s and it is a serious issue to me, and I would not forward the picture, but it is still funny to me on a slightly uncomfortable level.

Pic. 4. This one is not making fun of the “mentally handicapped” at all. It is making fun of the picture, or the event. It would be just as funny if the person standing there was a world class athlete. The point is that second and third place were apparently trees. And it is not even clear from the picture that the person is “mentally” handicapped.

  31. Joe P. (5 comments) says:

ya know, i had evidence in hand as well as confirmation from several sources of what Goforth did and how she responded when confronted about her email
before i posted anything about her and her email.

so far today, all i’ve seen is a claim from BCM that an offensive email was sent out by a staffer, then a comment to ID the emailer and that “shortly” after it was sent out this person also apologized for sending it.

i’ve not seen a copy of the full email, not seen a list of who sent it and to where
the email was sent … so i have very little to write about, as i see it. claims that the email had “more, of course, with vulgar language (including a couple of **F** bombs), quasi-nudity, and the Left’s puzzling fascination with Nazis” may or may not be true, but since I have not seen a copy of this email, how can i offer a viewpoint about it??

if in time actual details about the email are made available, i might write about
it, but it is hard to predict since i know so little of what happened.

  34. N.S. Allen (6 comments) says:

You know - some racism is worse than others.

“Hahah, Asians talk funny” is, at least as presented by that macro, a pretty racist sentiment. It’s the sort of thing that people should roll their eyes at and frankly call offensive, not laugh over. (Particularly because the image in question just isn’t funny, to start with.)

But it’s ultimately not malicious. Stupid, yes. Malicious, no. The message isn’t “The Japanese are lesser than us good, white Americans because of their accents!” It’s “Hey, Japanese folks pronounce their L’s funny!” That doesn’t make it not racist, nor does it make it a good joke to send out from your government job.

The picture of the presidents with Obama, though, had a much darker, underlying message: “Hahah, this black guy thinks he can be president! Doesn’t he realize that presidents are white? Stupid black guy!”

One of those is a dumb joke almost totally irrelevant to the social and political structure of the modern day U.S. The other is a politically loaded jibe that jumps up and down on the most sensitive, racial issue in the nation, the long-term, structurally enforced inferiority of blacks’ access to American politics.

They’re both bad. Neither is funny. The twits who sent each of them should be punished. But the presidents picture is worse. And, yes, it is a more racist image that the “ROR” one. Because context matters.

  35. Blue Collar Muse (295 comments) says:

    @ Red -

Yes, and Sean is also reporting that I am a Memphis Conservative. That is wrong, too. Sean needs to do a bit more fact checking.

I don’t deny that Graves has listed membership in the College Republicans in both his Resolution honoring him from the state and his FaceBook Page. But at his FaceBook page he also lists himself as Politically Liberal. While he may also associate with the GOP, he probably is viewed in the same manner as those on the Left view Conservative Democrats.

Finally Red, you reveal yourself not to have read my post at all or as unable to understand plain English. Nowhere in my post did I excuse the GOP staffer’s actions. Nowhere did I suggest that they were somehow acceptable and that the Democrats should lighten up on their treatment of her because “They do it too.” The entire point of my piece was to ask what the Democrats response would be to Racism from a GOP staffer and from one of their own. There have been a couple of folks who have expressed their equal outrage. The balance of those on the Left have sought to somehow make the sins of their sons less sinful than the sins of their neighbor’s son. About what I expected.

  36. Blue Collar Muse (295 comments) says:

    @ Joe P -

I can understand your reluctance to post. After all, it’s hard to hold your own to as high a standard as you hold others.

I read your post from yesterday. You don’t provide any of the information that you ask of me except the list of recipients. Even that, regardless of when you say you had it, came only at the end of a series of Updates.

In the meantime, I’m unclear why you want me to provide you with information that is, and was at the time you asked, already available. Southern Beale admitted she received the email. We know who the guy was that sent it. And he has now resigned. You still looking for proof of the validity of my post?

Word is you are a pretty fair guy. I hope to keep that assessment of you intact by the time this is done.

  37. Sean Braisted (3 comments) says:

My mistake, I mixed up you and BCR…it has been corrected.

  38. Joe P. (5 comments) says:

Thanks for the response and for reading what i write.

You are right - i did not reprint the image, and only later added the names of those it went to — but i had posted zip about it until, as i said, i had in hand copies of what was sent and to who and Goforth’s response to the claims. I still have in my possession the info from the email should anyone ask about them, and as i said, i did wait until i had multiple confirmations of the reports about the email before i wrote about it — just as with your report.

whether i wind up supporting views from Left or Right or wherever all depends on the issue at hand. i don’t belong to a political party.

and now that i do have what i feel comfortable is enough proof about this email from Graves, i posted my thought about it and about the problems of government staffers sending out these bone-dumb, tasteless emails disguised as humor:

  41. Blue Collar Muse (295 comments) says:

    @ Joe P -

Understood. And I did the same. But since my point was to find out what Democrats and the Left would do, I chose to follow their timeline and practice as closely as possible to see.

Now the young man has resigned, he was not fired as is being reported. And the Left side of the blogosphere is the one who might be characterized as “stung hard and reeling”. They are the ones who have said, “Well, it’s racist, but it’s not as racist as what the other guys did”, it’s not really racist because there’s real humor in it, and assigned hateful motives to the creator of the pic.

I note that you, yourself, conclude your own piece with a reference to White Supremacy groups, hate groups and such. I’m wondering where that reference fits in to the narrative at hand. Are you suggesting that either party belongs to such a group? Are you suggesting that the Right or the GOP is made up of such? And if you are suggesting that such groups and membership apply to this discussion, perhaps you missed a zillion or so years of American history revealing the party that sponsored and fostered racism in that fashion in this country. To put a very blunt point on it - that would be the Democratic Party.

Perhaps we could step back from this particular brink and limit our conversation to the situation and facts at hand. Gratuitously bringing in an inflammatory and extraneous message at the end of the day would seem to be unwise as well as a potential minefield for you moreso than me.

But you are free to do what you wish …

By 2:31, it was increasingly obvious the answer to that question was “No”.

I didn’t need to continue the timeline once the point had been made that for many on the Left, consistency and integrity are sorely lacking. This does not say anything at all about the Right. But I’m very glad to see that no-one’s used the term “reverse racism” here, as that implies that racism can only be perpetuated by white people against non-white people. That’s accurate.

Just never mind Charlie Rangel, Sonia Sotomayor, Jeremiah Wright, James Clyburn, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, David Paterson and all the rest of the “reverse racists”

Great post. Deciphering Liberal rhetoric is hard to do since they hide their true beliefs behind claims to be open minded and tolerant. But occasionally you can catch them slip up and say what they really think. Remember during the campaign, one doctor thought Sarah Palin should have aborted Trig since he would have a poor quality of life. I find Liberalism to more morally degenerate than other Totalitarians world views like Nazism. The Nazis only dehumanized the Jews, Liberals dehumanize all of us, particularly on the issue of abortion. Liberals believe that there are lives unworthy of life just as the Nazis did and hold to a purely arbitrary view of human personhood.
