Washington Post doesn’t know the meaning of the word “illegal”
The Washington Post Headline screams sob story. It reads “Latinos Looking Over Shoulder.”
According to the writers, day laborers in Prince William County can no longer get coffee in the morning or go to latino restaurants at lunch time. They all live in fear now that police are empowered to check immigration status when any infraction of the law is committed.
Immigrant advocate groups, speaking at a community meeting Sunday in Woodbridge and on local Spanish-language radio stations, have been advising immigrants without legal papers to keep a low profile and obey all traffic rules. If stopped by police, the groups said, they should be polite and show some identification but otherwise remain silent until they can see a lawyer.
“We are telling people to drive perfectly, not to spit or jaywalk, and not to carry anything in a brown paper bag,” said Nancy Lyhall, a volunteer with the local pro-immigrant group Mexicans Without Borders. “They should be the model of model citizens.”
What the Washington Post writers don’t seem to grasp is the fact that only illegal aliens have reason for concern. Hispanics in the country legally are being painted as victims of an oppressive and racist legal system. The obvious solution to any worries the affected group (illegal aliens) might have would be to not commit infractions. They should perhaps start by remedying the initial infraction they committed by entering the country illegally. The lowest profile is maintained by not being there.
The Washington Post may want to try a little intellectual honesty when reporting on enforcement of laws affecting illegal aliens only (this doesn’t include implying in the article that all hispanics should worry about being stopped and possibly deported for small infractions.)
