California Democrat sums up his party’s view on taxes

Published by Sam Pierce at 8:22 pm under General Common Sense, Politics

The Drudge Report has a link to a Mercury News article titled: “Higher State Tax on Beer.”

Since I enjoy beer and am always interested to see how Democrats in other states try to push their socialist agenda, I clicked the link. Here is an excerpt and pay particular attention to the last line of the excerpt:

SACRAMENTO - Joe Six-pack will have to pay a lot more to get his buzz on if Assemblyman Jim Beall has his way.

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That’s an increase of about 1,500 percent.

Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

“The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we’ve accepted that concept with tobacco,” Beall said.

He added that the beer tax hasn’t been touched since 1991, and the increase then was meager.

That last sentence presents the Democrat Party’s position on taxes with a simple crystal clarity. Taxes are not a necessary evil to these crusading defenders of the victim classes of their own creation. No, no, no, taxes are a goal to be reached. Taxes are to be grown and nurtured since there is no greater cause than government.

I can’t help but wonder how often and in what increment taxes on beer and other products should be increased. What is an adequate level of revenue for a bloated and wasteful government?

What other taxes be increased by 1500%? Personally I think it would be more productive and responsible if we could find a way to reduce all federal, state, and local governments to the percentage of their current sizes that enable them to carry out their constitutional roles and absolutely nothing more!

Perhaps B. Hussein Obama would call me bitter for wanting to cling to my liberty, my beer, and my Constitution.
