(not so) Happy 34th Anniversary Roe v. Wade!

The irony of this post is that I am really too busy to blog about it with semester start-up insanity for our campus pro-life group. When it all comes down, January 22nd is just another day when nearly 4000 innocent children are murdered. The anniversary of the court decision seems somewhat trivial given the state of current events. That said, I someday hope to be able to attend the March for Life in D.C. … someday when Cornell’s first day of classes are not on January 22nd.

Because I honestly don’t have time today to write a blog that does justice to this issue, here are some great sites for information about abortion:

http://www.abort73.com

http://www.aclife.org

http://www.selfevidenttruth.org

http://www.abortionno.org

http://www.all.org

http://www.feministsforlife.org

http://www.operationrescue.org

and the list could be never ending. Those are just the few that I use frequently as resources for CCFL. Allahpundit over at HotAir links to some great commentaries about the anniversary. The way he approached the issue (as merely throwing a piece of juicy red meat to conservatives) is rather pathetic in my eyes, but as I said, I simply have no time to get into it right now.

For your reading pleasure (or displeasure, as the case may be), I just dug up an article I wrote for a conservative campus newspaper in October ‘05 about the liberal reaction to a pro-life display on campus. Although it was specifically discussing that display, I feel the comparisons of abortion to genocide are as true today as they were last year - if not worse since millions more babies have died since then.

Like many other institutions of higher education, Cornell University seems to foster a political environment far from reality. Liberal students pride themselves on being socially aware of all the important issues, but realistically, they know nothing.

Politically “active” groups and individuals pretend to be dead on Ho Plaza in an attempt to protest the War on Iraq. They hold feel-good forums complaining about racism and Hurricane Katrina, thinking it makes them appear intelligent. However, when faced with the truth (i.e. a newly approved Iraqi constitution or a lack of any proof of racism concerning Katrina) they merely turn their heads and pretend they still don’t know. Or, even worse, they cry foul.

Recently, a few individuals have complained in The Cornell Daily Sun about their “misfortune” of walking through Ho Plaza on Monday, October 17. Apparently, they were uncomfortable with the revelation of yet another truth which counters their world of political make-believe.

This truth was exposed by the Cornell Coalition for Life (CCFL) when they hosted the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP). The purpose of this event is pretty straightforward: to raise awareness of the commonalities between historical genocides and abortion using comparative photo murals.

Many groups and individuals would like to deny the comparison between historical examples of genocide and the current epidemic of abortion. However, every great evil was originally thought to be justifiable in some way by the perpetrators. Slavery existed because blacks were considered to be animals and completely undeserving of basic human rights. Nazism flourished because Hitler and the Germans felt that the Jews were a sub-human race and the world would be a purer place without them. Today, the abortion industry thrives because unborn children are classified as nothing more than clumps of cells.

For those who would still disagree with the use of the term genocide, the Center for Bioethical Reform states, “There are several dictionary definitions of “genocide.” One is the extermination of a national group. The national group is unborn American children. They are being genocidally killed because of the fact that they are unborn and unwanted.” Furthermore, the numbers do not lie. Since 1973, when the Supreme Court determined that unborn babies were non-persons, over 40 million innocent American children have been murdered.

Obviously, a brief glance at the facts of abortion overwhelmingly leads to the conclusion that abortion is legitimately comparable to (if not worse than) every historical example of genocide. Why, then, do liberals and proponents of “choice” still cry foul whenever GAP comes to Cornell?

Simply put, they are in denial. The left is still holding tightly onto their false perception of reality. Fetuses are not babies. They are not living beings. They are merely clumps of cells and no one is supposed to know (or see) any differently.

Certainly, it must be difficult to maintain a pro-choice mentality when faced with the horrific images of the results of abortion. Seeing a larger than life picture of an aborted baby is difficult to counter. Visible features such as hands, feet, fingers and toes make it difficult to classify unborn children as gobs of goo subject to a woman’s choice.

Visually, yes, the pictures are disconcerting and to a certain extent “disgusting.” However, the disgust comes from the fact that we as a society permit this. Pictures of lynched slaves or slaughtered Cambodians elicit gut reactions of horror because it is inconceivable to most humans with any degree of conscience that such senseless killing occurs.

Many individuals are simply ignorant of the similar results of “choice.” Because abortion has been deemed socially acceptable, people are not exposed to what it does to children. The pictures presented by GAP confront whatever idealistic perceptions of abortion students might have. They leave no room to question or deny the effects of abortion. Even so, the members of Students Acting for Gender Equality (SAGE) manage to do just that.

Soon after CCFL reserved Ho Plaza space for GAP, SAGE also reserved space to hold a counter protest. Actually, the Office of the Dean of Students reserved the space “in case” SAGE wanted to hold a counter protest, and of course they did. It is questionable whether or not Kent Hubbell would have given the same courtesy to CCFL or any other conservative group had the situation been reversed.

So, with the support of the administration, SAGE was on Ho Plaza ready to defend abortion to the deathbad pun intended. Their table featured brilliantly thought out signs such as “Warning Dangerous Fanatics Ahead” and “Pro-Choice and Proud.”

By far, the most interesting (and ironic) sign was the one that read “Pro-Choice, Pro-Family, Pro-Child.” This was also the recurring sound byte used by SAGE’s Pro-Choice Committee Chair Adriane Bracciale ’07 over the sound system. Why do defenders of abortion feel the need to emphasize that they really don’t hate children? If, as they claim, fetuses are simply clumps of cells, does it even matter?

Clearly, when faced with the undeniable pictures of aborted children, it does matter. GAP puts a face on abortion. Individuals who witness the images can never think of abortion the same way. Denying the existence of life becomes, at best, a disputable point. So, SAGE and other abortion advocates must come up with a new strategy. Their new defense is neither complex nor unexpected. In typical liberal fashion, when challenged by the truth they simply turn their heads, ignore the issue, and make something new up; something “Pro Family” and “Pro Child” and of course, “Pro Life.”

In a Guest Room column from the October 19 edition of The Sun, Bracciale and fellow SAGE member co-president Jamie Gullen ’07 stated that, “Hundreds of thousands of women died from self-induced and botched abortions before members of the medical and religious communities pushed for reform. This was the reason for the pro-choice movement to save lives,” (emphasis added).

Now here, they almost have a point. If only Dr. Bernard Nathanson (co-founder of NARAL and former abortionist) hadn’t already admitted that the early abortion rights movement fabricated the “hundreds of thousands” figures; if only abortion had been legalized through social, political, and religious means rather than through a tyrannous Supreme Court; if only abortion didn’t kill children; then, SAGE would really have a legitimate argument.

All in all, the pro-choice movement has reached its plateau. There is nowhere else for them to go but into denial. The horrific truth about abortion is moving rapidly throughout the country. Through events like GAP, the truth has even arrived at the leftist havens known as colleges and universities. Now, the pro-life movement must use this weakness to its advantage. Just as the abolitionists fought against slavery and the Allied forces against Nazism, so must conservatives and all true defenders of life rise up and put an end to our generation’s manifestation of genocide. Abortionthe senseless killing of innocent children masquerading as a woman’s “right to choose”must be stopped.

    I read this through my RSS service and couldn’t figure out how you got such a long post for not having time; I decided to come to the actual post to commend you on expressing your thoughts so clearly, then I saw the blockquote and figured out how you got the long post.

    At any rate, excellently, gold-star, top notch, four-star, A+, well-written article!

    The pro-aborts are quite full of inconsistency in their opinions. I call them pro-aborts because that seems to be the only choice they encourage.

    I’ve seen images from modern 3D ultrasounds and the technology that God has blessed this nation with is incredible. Unfortunately it all too often gets used to consider abortion (Down Syndrome screening, designer babies, etc…) May God have mercy on our nation long enough for us to repent of our apathy towards the unborn.

    I’m coming out completely on the other side on this issue. I’m pro choice! There, I said it. If you don’t want to have a child, you should always have the choice of (1) remaining abstinent, or (2) using some form of birth control.

    If you don’t choose one of those options, well, you kind of chose already, didn’t you?

    Ok, maybe I’m not exactly on the other side of this issue…

    Some TRUTH about Abortion:

    Abortion Is Four Times Deadlier
    Than Childbirth. New Studies Unmask High Maternal Death Rates From Abortion
    http://www.afterabortion.org/PAR/V8/n2/finland.html

    Some Statistics

    Half of all pregnancies to American women are unintended; four in 10 of these end in abortion.

    About half of American women have experienced an unintended pregnancy, and at current rates more than one-third (35%) will have had an abortion by age 45.

    Overall unintended pregnancy rates have stagnated over the past decade, yet unintended pregnancy increased by 29% among poor women while decreasing 20% among higher-income women.

    In 2002, 1.29 million abortions occurred, down from 1.36 million abortions in 1996.

    Nine in 10 abortions occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

    A broad cross section of U.S. women have abortions:
    56% of women having abortions are in their 20s;
    61% have one or more children;
    67% have never married;
    57% are economically disadvantaged;
    88% live in a metropolitan area; and
    78% report a religious affiliation.
