My Weekend Beef

Unfortunately not of the jerky variety.

So, there have been a few “issues” lately that have simply annoyed me and I feel like complaining. Griping. Whining. Kvetching. I have a beef. (Thesaurus.com is really amazing, just so you know.)

But really, I just want to address this one: Ann Coulter

If you know anything about me, you realize that my beef is not with the sensational Ann, but with her latest round of detractors. Everybody seems to have their panties up in a bundle over her latest comment at CPAC. Honestly, it is starting to get a little insane. Ann Coulter is sarcastic. She makes sarcastic jokes. She makes brilliant, serious points through sarcastic jokes. She has written some of the most intelligent books of the century - Slander, Treason, Godless, etc.

What other conservative has had the nerve to attack Bill Clinton, the mainstream media, and the godless religion of liberalism repeatedly? What other conservative has also had the boldness to document liberal treachery and defend Joe McCarthy? I would say that the list of such conservatives is quite short. That is not to say that there aren’t any other such conservatives, but how popular are they? How many people have read their books? How many people actually know what their message is? I would warrant a guess that the list of such people is even shorter than the list of such conservatives. Why? Because they don’t know how to attract an audience. They don’t know how to make people listen.

Ann Coulter knows exactly how to make people wake up, sit up, and listen to what she has to say. You can attack her methods all you want, but she is extremely effective at getting out the conservative message in a blunt, pure way.

To the people that are angry about her John Edwards “faggot” comment… get over yourselves. Seriously. Here is what she said: “I’d say something about John Edwards, but if you say ‘faggot’ you have to go to rehab.” Haha, alright, so I still chuckle a little every time I read it. First of all, she is not implying that John Edwards is a homosexual. Honestly, give her some credit. John Edwards is a sissy. A ninny. A wimp of the worst sort. That is what Ann is referring to. Also, the main point of her joke is about the latest Hollywood/liberal fad - rehab. Any slip of the tongue, or scissors in the case of Britney Spears, can be fixed with a quick trip to rehab.

Unfortunately, many conservatives seem to be falling right into line with the liberal attacks on Ann. They are crying about one sentence. One sentence. She gave an entire speech. She even had a Q&A session following her speech. She says “inflammatory” things all the time… and you still cry if she hurts your feelings? Conservatives claim to be upset because this just gives the left ammo against Republicans for being intolerant and such. Oh, give me a break. Seriously, give me a break. The left calls Republicans intolerant every other day for every other word that comes out of our mouths. They don’t need ammo. They would love to be able to stifle someone like Ann Coulter, who does not hesitate to expose every single asinine, hypocritical thing they say or do. So, they cry foul every time she blinks wrong at them. Thanks to thin-skinned conservatives who get all defensive and pouty at Ann, liberals believe they are accomplishing their goal.

Just to clarify, my defense of Ann isn’t from some wish-washy Republican “11th Commandment” shtick - “Thou shalt not attack thy fellow Republican” or however it goes. I love to attack my fellow “Republicans” when they don’t act very Republican. I just feel like this whole thing has gotten out of hand. It’s a joke. If you don’t like it, then don’t laugh. That’s your prerogative.

Alright, so this is somewhat of a disorganized rant - but that’s what a beef is, isn’t it?

That’s not very funny, is it? How was Ann’s comment any different than the one I just made? We don’t have to stop loving Ann because we condemn something she said. I condemn my kids almost daily, for goodness’ sake. I sill think Ann is great, but she deserves a scolding.

I only deleted the first part for you because I feel like the second half is worth keeping.

Honestly, I’m torn. I really don’t think this comment was that big of a deal and I’m not exactly sure what people are upset about. In fact, no one seems to be sure. Is it because she used the word “faggot”? Is it because she implied Edwards is gay? (which she didn’t). I just don’t get it.

And I absolutely feel that her comment is very different from talking about Obama’s race. Because John Edwards isn’t gay (he’s just a wimp) and everybody pretty much knows it, this should be taken at face value as a joke. Obama is black, and so a derogatory comment like that would be appropriately offensive.

Just because I feel like rambling, I do want to clarify that there are things I disagree with Ann on. I’m not a big fan of her jokes about womens suffrage because I don’t know exactly how much of that is joking and how much is serious. However, I don’t let it offend me because I know that is just who she is and I appreciate everything else she talks about. So… I guess I’m trying to say that I don’t completely worship her. Only mostly.

It’s TOTALLY because she used the word ‘faggot’. My impression of her statements were that she was making more fun of people going to rehab for silly things than poking fun at Edwards. But you can’t use the word ‘faggot’ in a humorous way. It’s just not possible. Just like the N-word, or the C-word. they’re just not funny.

As I said, I’m a huge fan of Ann Coulter. She’s a freakin’ genius 99% of the time. If we, as supporters of her, can convince her to avoid making obnoxious statements, we all win. Her message would reach further if her detractors could not say she called someone a ‘faggot’ or a ‘raghead’. I agree with you and the lady from Sunflower Desert that Ann rocks, but I also disagree with you both because I think she should be scolded for her statements.

I think we might have to agree to disagree on this one Kevin. Granted, the term faggot is not very professional, but it is not in the same category as the examples you are using (at least to me). I think the term fits in with other terms such as sluts, whores, trailer trash, etc… I thought the joke was funny in the context it was given. I’d say sorry, except I’m not.

I guess. After seeing her response on H&C, I’m falling back under her evil spell. She handled Colmes brilliantly.

Still, it’s just one more argument that we now have to surmount to defend her position. That’s annoying.
