Baby Emilio Dies

This is a little old - from Saturday - but important nonetheless.

Baby Emilio Dies While on Life Support

(CBS 42) AUSTIN The infant, Emilio Gonzales, better known as ‘Baby Emilio’ died Saturday at Children’s Hospital.

The baby’s mother says the doctors told her that Emilio’s heart stopped at 7:27 p.m.

He was not taken off life support. He died naturally.

It is always hard to find comfort in these situations, but at least this little boy got to die naturally, in his own time, without the “assistance” of the physicians at the Children’s Hospital of Austin. I use the term “physicians” rather loosely, since any medical professional who consciously chooses to end a life rather than attempt to save it is no physician to me. Bridget had a good post about this story and the Texas Futile-Care Law a while back over at Helvidius, a Pachyderm.

One last, rather insulting note from the Fox News article:

“We mourn the death of Emilio Gonzales,” Michael Regier, senior vice president of legal services for the Seton Family of Hospitals, said in a statement. “We pray that in the days and weeks to come, Emilio’s mother and family will be comforted by God’s loving presence and by the knowledge that Emilio’s earthly suffering is now ended.”

If I were the Gonzales family, I would tell the hospital to keep their prayers for someone else. Personally, I would not be a huge fan if (non-repentant) murderers offered up their prayers for me or my family.

Thank you for the update. Very sad to hear that he died, but, of course, I am relieved to hear that it happened naturally. His parents will not spend every day of their lives wondering if he could have lived.

The Texas law doesn’t go far enough, but is (thankfully) a huge improvement over the previous law.
