Nick Cannon: “Can I Live?”

I will always be a part of you
Trust your soul, know its always true
If I could talk to you, I would say to you
Can I live?

This video by rapper Nick Cannon is over two years old now, yet I had never watched it before today. Cannon, a well-known comedian, rapper, and tv star, had this to say shortly after the song was released:

“This record is extremely important to me and to our community. There are a lot of young mothers in need and have had to struggle to raise their children. I just wanted to recognize all the strong women who are raising children on their own like my mother had to do. Myself and my foundation really want to help these young women. If any of you out there know a single mother between the ages of 15-25 who may be having a difficult time I would love to hear the story. Please write to me and explain the condition and how I could possibly help. I will check the website and respond accordingly.”

So, while Cannon does not make a clear anti-abortion statement, I think the video and his effort to reach out to single mothers speak for themselves.

Earlier this year, Neil over at 4simpsons posted a video by hip hop group Flipsyde entitled “Happy Birthday.” Listening to this man ask what his child would have been had he not paid for his murder is heart-wrenching, to say the least.

There is another song/music video by Ben Folds Five called “Brick” — watch it here. Again, Folds makes no clear statement about abortion. In fact, I would not be surprised either way if he were pro-life or pro-choice. However, the story of the lyrics and the hurt in Folds’ voice seems to point in the direction that abortion is not some easy procedure that has no lasting effects.

Songs and videos like these show that abortion does not hurt only women and kill their children. Men are obviously affected as well.

I appreciate when these artists - whatever their flaws - are honest about the abortion topic. Hopefully it will make people think twice.

Neil - I completely agree. I mean, there’s no way to tell whether someone like Ben Folds is pro-life or pro-choice, but at least he has the honesty to express his true feelings.
