In2theFray,

Thank you for that perspective. (Now that I'm done eating dinner, thank you for that perspective.....)

It is conceivable that the organ ambulance could beat the 911 ambulance to a given call.

Oh, that's creepy. Call me strange, but it seems as if NYC could save lives by... improving EMT services and the amount of resources available for EMTs, right?

The "kosher bus?" What is that - an ambulance that can be eaten with either meat or milk?

Actually, I'm now curious about this "kosher ambulance."

I worked as a EMT and a paramedic in MA.During my days in the private sector I had the opportunity to shuttle the New England Organ Bank folks around. We called them the ghouls. That time of my life is one of the reasons I refuse to be an organ donor today. The most searing memory was a 17 y/o male who was involved in a car accident. The damage to him was extensive. I remember the ghouls etc. waiting impatiently for the family to say good bye.
I can also attest to NYC specifically. I did my paramedic internship in Harlem. The backlog of responses and the always full ER's are a curse of any big city. It is conceivable that the organ ambulance could beat the 911 ambulance to a given call. I'll use the example of how NYC EMS w/ me in tow hit more than one call with a patient who insisted on waiting for the "kosher bus" These were volunteer units that catered to the Hasidic population.

Sam,

I forgot about that. I guess they would have to feed him chocolate and see what happens. ;)

Neil,

ROFL. Don't forget: it's for the greater good. The trick to surviving until you're 80? Make sure that your life is part of the "greater good" and that your death will not be used to advance it.
