Tieke Rae,

I think you misunderstood me, I was saying that the burglers were useless and stupid to rely on their guns, and the "unarmed" homeowners had the best weapons possible;

courage in their hearts and functioning brains.

People with mental toughness, quick-thinking and resolve are always armed.

People who dont have those things never are, no matter how many guns they have.

<em>Teresa's last blog post..<a href='http://www.anomalousdata.com/Free+Market+Baitandswitch.aspx' rel="nofollow">"Free market" bait-and-switch</a></em>

I would guess that the urge to protect one's children can be pretty powerful and empowering in such a situation. The man who brought that shotgun into this house as part of a criminal act got what he richly deserved.

Teresa - I agree with you to some extent that a gun is only as useful as the person holding it. Responsible gun owners are trained in every detail of their firearm and have the confidence to use it as they may need.

However, in this situation, I don't get the impression that this family owned any guns - after all, when the woman screamed for her husband, he did not come out with a gun. I am nearly positive that the woman was not trained in how to take a shotgun from an intruder and I doubt the husband was out on the range using one every day.

Basically, I believe this came down to a very simple battle between good and evil. Though the family was at an inherent disadvantage without a weapon, they used what they had (and what the criminals had!) and fought for their lives. They had the confidence that what they were doing was right, as opposed to the criminals who were probably peeing themselves at that point.

I blogged this as well.

Basically, it seems to me that the burglers screwed up by buying into the typical American mindset that guns are magical boom-srticks that turn you into an all-powerful being if you have one.

Obviously, we can see from this story that a gun is only as useful as the person holding it.

AWESOME.

On a related, but horrible and depressing note, five women were buried alive in an Islamic province. Their crime: wanting to choose their own husbands. They were lead away from their homes at gunpoint, then thrown into a ditch and buried alive.

Between those two deaths, I would rather be shot. People often forget that dying isn't the worst thing - and sometimes, it's just how you die - and there are worse things than do go down fighting.
