Why People Don’t Mess with Texas

Via FoxNews.com, Texas Man Kills Home Intruder With His Own Gun

Apparently, some lessons have to be learned the hard way.  Earlier this week, two home intruders decided to mess with the wrong family and broke in though their glass front door.

The 34-year-old mother of two grabbed a shotgun that had been pointed at her face early Wednesday, starting a struggle that ended with one intruder killed with his own weapon and another in the hospital.

“I wasn’t going to let them get to my babies,” she said, recalling the moment when she pushed up the muzzle of the shotgun, pointing it away from her children’s rooms.

The truest form of motherhood, is it not?  Fighting for the lives of your children?

With Kellie Hoehn clinging to the weapon’s muzzle, her husband tackled the man who held the shotgun. She knocked the intruder in the head with a jar candle, giving her husband a chance to wrest the shotgun.

By then the tussle had spilled out onto the front lawn. Keith Hoehn shot one of the men who had a pistol, police said. Wounded, that man ran away.

Then the intruder who initially had the shotgun charged Keith Hoehn.

Kellie Hoehn told The Dallas Morning News that she screamed at her husband, “Shoot him, shoot him, shoot him.”

Her husband fired the shotgun and the man fell to the ground. Then the shot man lunged a second time.

“Well, I shot him again, and I guess that was it,” Keith Hoehn said.

This is an incredible story that inspires me because it shows that not everyone in America believes the line of crap that when faced with a gun you just do what you’re told and hope for the best.  This husband and wife ought to be lauded as heroes, not only for defending themselves and their children, but for standing up to evil and not being ashamed about it.

“I am not happy that someone is dead,” Kellie Hoehn said. “But I am glad that my family is alive.”

    AWESOME.

On a related, but horrible and depressing note, five women were buried alive in an Islamic province. Their crime: wanting to choose their own husbands. They were lead away from their homes at gunpoint, then thrown into a ditch and buried alive.

Between those two deaths, I would rather be shot. People often forget that dying isn’t the worst thing - and sometimes, it’s just how you die - and there are worse things than do go down fighting.

    I blogged this as well.

Basically, it seems to me that the burglers screwed up by buying into the typical American mindset that guns are magical boom-srticks that turn you into an all-powerful being if you have one.

Obviously, we can see from this story that a gun is only as useful as the person holding it.

Teresa - I agree with you to some extent that a gun is only as useful as the person holding it. Responsible gun owners are trained in every detail of their firearm and have the confidence to use it as they may need.

However, in this situation, I don’t get the impression that this family owned any guns - after all, when the woman screamed for her husband, he did not come out with a gun. I am nearly positive that the woman was not trained in how to take a shotgun from an intruder and I doubt the husband was out on the range using one every day.

Basically, I believe this came down to a very simple battle between good and evil. Though the family was at an inherent disadvantage without a weapon, they used what they had (and what the criminals had!) and fought for their lives. They had the confidence that what they were doing was right, as opposed to the criminals who were probably peeing themselves at that point.

I would guess that the urge to protect one’s children can be pretty powerful and empowering in such a situation. The man who brought that shotgun into this house as part of a criminal act got what he richly deserved.

    Tieke Rae,

    I think you misunderstood me, I was saying that the burglers were useless and stupid to rely on their guns, and the “unarmed” homeowners had the best weapons possible;

courage in their hearts and functioning brains.

People with mental toughness, quick-thinking and resolve are always armed.

People who dont have those things never are, no matter how many guns they have.
