Barack Obama Attempts to Drum Up Support By Implying that Sarah Palin is a Pig

Ever since Sarah Barracuda delivered her famous line (”What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick.”) at the RNC, the Dems have been in high dungeon over the whole thing. Now, Barack Obama hit a new low: “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”  (Hat tip: Patterico.)

Note to Barack Obama: Hillary voters aren’t going to vote for the guy who trashed their girl, then implied that his female opponent is a barnyard animal.  Kiss that female vote good-bye.

Now, who wants this guy as their commander-in-chief?  Anyone?  Bueller?

Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn would love to see this guy as their commander-in-chief, but then again they like to bomb their own government buildings.

What? He did mention Mrs. Palin once in that clip. He was talking about policy.

    Sam,

    Seriously. :)

    Teresa,

Not by name, but he still called her a pig.

At the RNC, Sarah Palin repeated her famous quip (which she once said to, IIRC, Bill Kristol): “What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick.” She’s a hockey mom.

Obama was referring to that at the end of the clip when he said that you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. Obviously, the “it” is Palin.

I don’t get it. The “lipstick on a pig” comment is an old, common idiom and he was clearly using it in referance to McCain’s policy.

In fact, I’m pretty sure Ive heard him use the “lipstick on a pig” line before her speech at the RNC. I’ll see if I can find it.

I have to agree with Teresa. The “lipstick on a pig” line is very, very old. Actually, it’s quite a good line.

    Teresa & Mark,

It is a very old line, but as I wasn’t born yesterday, I can’t believe that it wasn’t perhaps a sly response to Palin’s pitbull line (which I realize wasn’t a Palin original before you jump up and down and scream a Rev. Wright-like “Naw! Naw! Naw!”)

    Mark and Teresa,

Let me be very, very clear.

No one is saying that it isn’t an old line.

No one is saying that it’s never been said before.

No one is saying that Paliln’s hockey mom/pit bull line is unique, either. Fact is, though, it was the most famous line from her speech, and Barack Obama is or should be aware of that.

What we are saying is that, IN CONTEXT, it is the use of an old line to imply that Palin is a pig. Are you seriously telling me that the man had no idea it would come off like that? If so, he’s a foolish man who should not be in the position of representing us to foreign countries (who have their own customs and standards of behaviour). If deliberate, then he’s passive-aggressive and should not be representing the 51% of this country that is female.

To me, this is obviously done in light of the most famous line form Palin’s speech, and is a little passive-aggressive girly move that gives his constituents a snicker and allows him to say, “Who, me?”

Sorry, but that’s playground stuff, not Presidential material.

  8. 8 Roxeanne de Luca

PS - even without that line, he’s speaking in reference to the opponents, who have the second female vice presidential candidate in the history of this country. Biden mentioned putting “lipstick” on Palin’s resume. Either way, it’s snide, passive-aggressive, and without class.

I hope that people keep defending it, though, because it’ll make him lose the moderates and independents. They might just sit it out, or they might vote for the Palin ticket to protest.

    Roxeanne,

I guess it’s another item we’ll have to agree to disagree on. He’ll have to go with his second line that he used on McCain’s policy right after this one about the fish that stinks..

…unless that’s off limits becasue the Palins are fisherpeople?

    :-)

And the one about dressing it up in different clothes is probably off limits ’cause Sarah’s known for being such a snappy dresser.

I think we both know that those examples aren’t in the same league as Obama’s statement here.

    Roxeanne

IN CONTEXT, he was applying lipstick to the pig of McCains policies. I’m pretty sure the context was laid out for you. The fact that you and others are overly sensitive shows how shallow things have become.

The fact that the McCain campaign is responding to this as an insult to Palin instead of his stance on policies shows how shallow even he has become.

The right response for McCain would be to take this as another opportunity to explain why his policies are sound and solid. Not to react like a child being called names.

    We have sunk so low…

  12. 12 Alfie

Yeah I see the pig reference as a dig and I raise you that the “old fish” is McCain. The latter especially works well with Obama justifiably criticizing what he views as McCains campaign antics.

I would have given Obama the benefit of the doubt if I didn’t know he usually uses teleprompters and that it was scripted. Best case for him is that he has a speech writer who couldn’t anticipate how it would get misinterpreted. But that is stretching things.

My bigger beef with him is that he has played the race card over and over and now acts shocked that people would “misinterpret” what he said. It isn’t the color of his skin, it is the lack of thickness.

  15. 15 Roxeanne de Luca

As usual, Neil makes the point very quickly.

To all: Obama is now claiming that the McCain campaign is “lying” about him over the lipstick issue and, of course, playing the gender card. Sigh.

  16. 16 Neil

I do think McCain’s team should not have asked for an apology. They’ll start to look like whiners as well. It would have been more effective to acknowledge that it was tasteless and then do what Mark said (i.e., get back to the real issues).

Unlike Obama’s team, which needs to manufacture falsehoods 24×7, we can go after his empty promises of change (picking Joe Biden and voting with the liberals 95% of the time doesn’t qualify), his socialistic views, his bad fiscal ideas, his complete and unrepentant errors on the surge, etc. Why waste time on anything that isn’t bulletproof?

I also agree with Teresa after listening to the entire audio. The context was about McCain and that his idea of change is like that of putting lipstick on a pig - it is still a pig just as McCain’s policies will be the same.

However, I think it was very stupid of Obama to use it considering that America would likely misunderstand it - as has been done. McCain’s crew has taken a hold of this general feeling and made an out-of-context audio commerical; and Obama is now crying foul. But it is part of the game and McCain’s crew is basically saying, “Don’t get within 1000 yards of my VP or I will bite you back so hard you’ll regret it.”

I think that Ben Stein’s comment that she needs to be baby-sat by Kissenger is a LOT more insulting. It called her out by name as inept, immature, and over her head. But he is a Republican and an Intelligent Designer, so it’s probably allright (not for Roxeanne, who is mostly sensible and generally made of awesome… but for many others)
