The New York Times, which had fawned all over the bipartisan McCain before this election, has resorted to finding a family in Texas to refute his use of the word “maverick.” You’ve hit a new low when the only attack they can level against you - but choose to so use anyway - is that the term “maverick” came from a family with the last name “Maverick,” and has been in the English language for 400 years. Apparently, some of the descendants of the original Maverick do not like McCain’s politics, and, given their bloodlines, assert the right to strip him of his chosen nickname.
Considering the family’s long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, “is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase.”
No wonder why it was the Republicans who fought the Democrats to abolish slavery. This is nothing more or less than the principles of monarchy, serfdom, and slavery at work: that the standing of one’s ancestors determines one’s station in life. According to these people, McCain, not being fortunate enough to be born with the last name “Maverick,” loses his moral right to use a word that has been in the English language for almost a half of a millennium.

I don’t know…on the scale topped by Bush-supportin’ Right-wingers doing a whisper campaign saying he had an “illegitimate black baby”, this seems a little tame.

And I think that mis-quoting Obama’s half-brother so that it looks like the older brother is claiming that Obama is a muslim is pretty darned slimey.

Teresa,
No disagreement about the slime, but “You did it to us” doesn’t make it right. More than that, are you talking about mainstream publications? Whisper campaigns aren’t the New York Times, which should be above these tactics.
Your right, that “You did it to us isn’t an excuse…but seriously, I dont think a bit of color-commentary puff piece can really count as an attack.
To me, an attack is more inciting crowd to yell “kill him” about your opponent.

Although it IS heartening to see McCain trying to quell the outrage that his misleading statements about Obama have inspired…it is obvious that he is now powerless to do so.
It reminds me of a quote from my favorite Sci-fi show ever…Babylon Five:
“The avalanch has begun, it is too late for the pebbles to vote.”
McCain has become a pebble in his own avalanch. Sad and unfortunate for such a formerly distiguished public servant, and so avoidable, and so irinic given his own complex history that he should try to frame Obama’s political situation so simplisticly and dishonestly, and have it bite him in the butt.
