Cornell Republicans to Rally for McCain

I haven’t been a member of the Cornell Republicans since my freshman year, but I’m still on their email list as I tend to agree more with them than with the College Democrats.  That said, one of the key reasons I quit the CRs was because they were more Republican than they were conservative. I guess you can’t really hold that against them.

Anyway, big news!

*What: Show your support for McCAIN!*
*When: TOMORROW, Thursday, April 3rd: Noon-1pm *
*Where: Ho Plaza, Cornell University*
*Who: Everyone Welcome!*
* *
*Come show your support for John McCain by voicing your support at a rally
sponsored by the Cornell College Republicans and Tompkins County GOP. The
rally will be covered by all local papers, so it is imperative that we have
a good turnout.*
* *
*Additionally, representatives from the local and state GOP executive
committees and the McCain campaign will be in attendance so it will be a
great networking opportunity for those looking to get more involved!*
* *
*Anyone who wishes to speak at the rally is invited to do so, but you must
have a written copy of what you plan to say emailed to [xxxx@cornell.edu] by midnight tonight to be added to the speaker’s list. We encourage everyone to participate!*
* *
*If you’re not big on public speaking, come and waive a sign and sport a
sticker and show your support for the next president of the United States!*

Conservatively,

[Chairman of the Cornell Republicans]

But really, was “Conservatively” the best way to sign off on that announcement?

Dating: Liberals vs. Conservatives

Following a rabbit trail of blog links yesterday, I came across this interview of six conservative bloggers via Michelle Malkin.

Immediately, I thought of this comic I have taped to my wall:

getfuzzy2007090116399

Why would anyone want to date someone from the Phylum Democrata?

[On a slightly more serious note, I can’t imagine dating a liberal/Democrat. If you don’t have any values in common, what’s the point? Plus, everyone knows liberals are sissies. Sure, their love of indie music and chuck taylors can be attractive, but their baby-killing, tax-raising, gun-control-loving tendencies are not!]

The New (and Improved) Haemet

Some of you may be under the impression that I have been the laziest blogger ever for the past few weeks. This is patently false. Surely there must be others who post less than once every three weeks? ;)

This weekend, I decided to make the transition from Haemet Yeshachrer Otcha to ConservaBlogs.com.

I have to admit, the change is a little overwhelming. There is so much I don’t know about blogging and it seems like I’ve joined a rather impressive group of conservative bloggers. Can you say intimidating? At the same time, it is obviously rather exciting. :)

Over the next couple weeks, I will probably be experimenting quite a bit with themes and widgets, plug-ins and other bloggy things I haven’t the slightest clue about. So, don’t be surprised if Haemet has a face-lift every time you come back.

Hopefully Haemet will be back on track after this switch is completed and I stop changing time zones every couple weeks. I never thought I would say this, but after my insane time in DC — Cornell in the fall is actually sounding pretty nice.

My Weekend Beef

Unfortunately not of the jerky variety.

So, there have been a few “issues” lately that have simply annoyed me and I feel like complaining. Griping. Whining. Kvetching. I have a beef. (Thesaurus.com is really amazing, just so you know.)

But really, I just want to address this one: Ann Coulter

If you know anything about me, you realize that my beef is not with the sensational Ann, but with her latest round of detractors. Everybody seems to have their panties up in a bundle over her latest comment at CPAC. Honestly, it is starting to get a little insane. Ann Coulter is sarcastic. She makes sarcastic jokes. She makes brilliant, serious points through sarcastic jokes. She has written some of the most intelligent books of the century - Slander, Treason, Godless, etc.

What other conservative has had the nerve to attack Bill Clinton, the mainstream media, and the godless religion of liberalism repeatedly? What other conservative has also had the boldness to document liberal treachery and defend Joe McCarthy? I would say that the list of such conservatives is quite short. That is not to say that there aren’t any other such conservatives, but how popular are they? How many people have read their books? How many people actually know what their message is? I would warrant a guess that the list of such people is even shorter than the list of such conservatives. Why? Because they don’t know how to attract an audience. They don’t know how to make people listen.

Ann Coulter knows exactly how to make people wake up, sit up, and listen to what she has to say. You can attack her methods all you want, but she is extremely effective at getting out the conservative message in a blunt, pure way.

To the people that are angry about her John Edwards “faggot” comment… get over yourselves. Seriously. Here is what she said: “I’d say something about John Edwards, but if you say ‘faggot’ you have to go to rehab.” Haha, alright, so I still chuckle a little every time I read it. First of all, she is not implying that John Edwards is a homosexual. Honestly, give her some credit. John Edwards is a sissy. A ninny. A wimp of the worst sort. That is what Ann is referring to. Also, the main point of her joke is about the latest Hollywood/liberal fad - rehab. Any slip of the tongue, or scissors in the case of Britney Spears, can be fixed with a quick trip to rehab.

Unfortunately, many conservatives seem to be falling right into line with the liberal attacks on Ann. They are crying about one sentence. One sentence. She gave an entire speech. She even had a Q&A session following her speech. She says “inflammatory” things all the time… and you still cry if she hurts your feelings? Conservatives claim to be upset because this just gives the left ammo against Republicans for being intolerant and such. Oh, give me a break. Seriously, give me a break. The left calls Republicans intolerant every other day for every other word that comes out of our mouths. They don’t need ammo. They would love to be able to stifle someone like Ann Coulter, who does not hesitate to expose every single asinine, hypocritical thing they say or do. So, they cry foul every time she blinks wrong at them. Thanks to thin-skinned conservatives who get all defensive and pouty at Ann, liberals believe they are accomplishing their goal.

Just to clarify, my defense of Ann isn’t from some wish-washy Republican “11th Commandment” shtick - “Thou shalt not attack thy fellow Republican” or however it goes. I love to attack my fellow “Republicans” when they don’t act very Republican. I just feel like this whole thing has gotten out of hand. It’s a joke. If you don’t like it, then don’t laugh. That’s your prerogative.

Alright, so this is somewhat of a disorganized rant - but that’s what a beef is, isn’t it?

“The politics of the man behind ‘24′”

Beautiful.

I discovered this last night on Drudge and it pretty much made my day. I’ve always known that even with the liberal plot twists of 24, there must be a conservative behind the whole thing merely tossing a few bones to the dems. I was so right.

During three decades as a journeyman screenwriter, Surnow grew increasingly conservative. He “hated welfare,” which he saw as government handouts. Liberal courts also angered him. He loved Ronald Reagan’s “strength” and disdained Jimmy Carter’s “belief that people would be nice to us just because we were humane. That never works.” He said of Reagan, “I can hardly think of him without breaking into tears. I just felt Ronald Reagan was the father that this country needed. . . . He made me feel good that I was in his family.”

Surnow said that he found the Clinton years obnoxious. “Hollywood under Clinton—it was like he was their guy,” he said. “He was the yuppie, baby-boomer narcissist that all of Hollywood related to.” During those years, Surnow recalled, he had countless arguments with liberal colleagues, some of whom stopped speaking to him. “My feeling is that the liberals’ ideas are wrong,” he said. “But they think I’m evil.” Last year, he contributed two thousand dollars to the losing campaign of Pennsylvania’s hard-line Republican senator Rick Santorum, because he “liked his position on immigration.” His favorite bumper sticker, he said, is “Except for Ending Slavery, Fascism, Nazism & Communism, War Has Never Solved Anything.”

The article itself is a little wishy-washy and whines about the way torture is portrayed on 24 — what do you expect from the New Yorker? — but the actual story of Joel Surnow (co-creator and executive producer) is simply beautiful. He is friends with Rush Limbaugh. He calls Bill Clinton a yuppie. He donated to Rick Santorum’s campaign. He believes torture works. He wants to make a pro-McCarthy movie with his friend Ann Coulter… and the list goes on. Honestly, does it get any better than that?

It just makes me happy inside to know that one of the most popular shows on TV comes from what could be the most conservative man in Hollywood. The lefties must simply love that.

Surnow, for his part, revels in his minority status inside the left-leaning entertainment industry. “Conservatives are the new oppressed class,” he joked in his office. “Isn’t it bizarre that in Hollywood it’s easier to come out as gay than as conservative?” His success with “24,” he said, has protected him from the more righteous elements of the Hollywood establishment. “Right now, they have to be nice to me,” he said. “But if the show tanks I’m sure they’ll kill me.”

Besides the fact that he gets to work with Kiefer Sutherland, I definitely do not envy his job - having to put up with all the Hollywood shenanigans and being surrounded by silly liberals pretty much all the time.

…Okay, wait. What am I saying? I would put up with anything to work with Kiefer Sutherland.
