Environmentalists Throwing Themselves Under the Bus

The Washington Post reported that the border fence between the United States and Mexico may damage the environment.  (Story here.)  Specifically, the fence may prevent various animals and plants from crossing the border and mating.  (The WaPo was unclear on how plants, which are not locomotive, would be affected by a fence.)  Some environmentalists are so incensed that the pronghorn and long-nose bat will be affected by the Bush Administration’s policies that they are threatening civil disobedience:

Some wildlife researchers have grown so concerned about the consequences of bisecting hundreds of miles of rugged habitat that they have talked of engaging in civil disobedience to block the fence’s construction.

“This wall is so asinine, and so wrong, I am one of a dozen scientists ready to lay our bodies down in front of tractors,” Healy Hamilton, who directs the Center for Biodiversity Research and Information at the California Academy of Sciences, told colleagues at a recent scientific retreat here. “This is one thing we might be able to stop.”

If you stop people from suctioning the brains out of the most vulnerable members of our own species, you have committed a federal offence.  If you impede the construction of a fence which inhibits illegal aliens from crossing the border and joining gangs in L.A., you will receive praise and adoration from the Left.  Totally sensible.

Obviously, it isn’t hard to see why a fence would impede migratory patterns, but the environmentalists aren’t content with complaining about the border fence:

[Pronghorns] are the only remaining population on U.S. soil, and the five surveillance towers that the administration plans to build in the area will be in the middle of the pronghorns’ range, producing noise and human activity that would disturb the sensitive species.

Ironically, the people who want to throw themselves under tractors are Darwinists.  Now, I’m not advocating a complete intrusion into native habitat, but if a species can’t put up with noise and the mere presence of non-predatory animals (here, humans) - and a minimal presence at that (five towers spread out over a few hundred miles), it isn’t fit for long-term survival.  Ditto for those who would throw themselves in front of tractors.

The Department of Homeland Security notes that the massive influx of illegal immigrants has caused its own environmental problems:

Homeland Security’s Kudwa said that agency officials tried to be sensitive to “both environmental and cultural artifacts” in the area, adding that by reducing the trash left by immigrants crossing the border, the barrier could improve the environment in some ways.

Just a guess, but the ocelet, jaugar, and long-nose bat probably aren’t helped much when they eat trash or drugs abandoned by border-crossers.  The resulting contamination of their water supply may be problematic as well.

Now, back to the plants:

Brian P. Segee, a Defenders of Wildlife staff lawyer, said the waiver decision will affect plants and animals in areas ranging from the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Texas to Arizona’s San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.

“We’re going forward blindly now, and we’re going to be learning about the consequences for years to come,” Segee said in an interview.

Yes, Mr. Segee, we are “blindly” stipulating that a stationary fence will harm stationary plants.  As plants often need animals to reproduce (e.g. bees that cross-pollinate flowers), it is possible that a deleterious effect on migratory animals could also affect local plants.  Nevertheless, unless the affected species are necessary to the survival of plants, and their contribution to the survival of the plants outweighs the negative effects of eating those plants, the border fence won’t harm plant life.  Is Mr. Segee concerned about a long evening shadow?  Or guessing blindly?  You decide.

Dating: Liberals vs. Conservatives

Following a rabbit trail of blog links yesterday, I came across this interview of six conservative bloggers via Michelle Malkin.

Immediately, I thought of this comic I have taped to my wall:

Why would anyone want to date someone from the Phylum Democrata?

[On a slightly more serious note, I can’t imagine dating a liberal/Democrat. If you don’t have any values in common, what’s the point? Plus, everyone knows liberals are sissies. Sure, their love of indie music and chuck taylors can be attractive, but their baby-killing, tax-raising, gun-control-loving tendencies are not!]

Ashcroft Visits Cornell — Community and Local Press Embarrass Themselves

Last night, former Attorney General John Ashcroft came to Cornell. He toured the campus and called it the most beautiful learning environment on earth! :)

Then he came to a small reception to meet and greet and briefly answer questions. I was privileged enough to meet Ashcroft at the reception. He was very down-to-earth, friendly, and answered some asinine questions quite brilliantly.

Following the reception, Ashcroft went on to speak before over 700 members of the Cornell and Ithaca communities. His defense of the Patriot Act and Guantanamo Bay was incredible. I had liberal friends tell me afterwards that he was so logical, they almost believed him — no small feat on Ashcroft’s part, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the speaking event was repeatedly disrupted by some of the most pathetic and immature demonstrations I have ever seen. Before Ashcroft even came on stage, a member of the Cornell Administration came up and referred to the sections of the Campus Code of Conduct on free speech and invited speakers. Essentially, his point was that Ashcroft has been invited to speak and may not be prevented from doing so. Also, attendees of the speech had the right to hear the presentation without interruption. Demonstrations and protests are allowed outside and those in disagreement with the speech may ask questions at the appropriate time following the speech. The Cornell Police and Campus Life staff were on hand to escort out any troublemakers.

I have to admit, for a few minutes there, I was actually optimistic that the administration would have a spine and actually enforce the rules they profess to abide by. Boy, did they fool me.

About halfway through the speech, some people in the crowd stood up, turned around, and put black hoods over their heads. I assume they were protesting about Gitmo. Audience members who were sitting behind these protesters could not see. Other liberals started yelling and shouting out questions when Ashcroft was still speaking. The administration did absolutely nothing. They only approached the shouters after about a minute and politely asked them to quiet down. About 10-15 minutes later, a person I recognized to be the leader of the campus International Socialist Organization blew a shrill whistle and the hooded figures exited the auditorium. That in itself was quite hilarious, as some old women who put on the hoods were tripping around and couldn’t find the door.

I must give Ashcroft a lot of credit. He handled the protesters better than I could have dreamed. Not only was his speech absolutely brilliant, but his response to the completely unintelligent questions and protests was consistently quick and clever. He turned the audience against the demonstrators. It was a proud moment for me. :)

As soon as the protesters stood up, I knew they were going to get free press in today’s papers. So, I decided to do a rough count of how many there were. My estimate was around 30 people, with no more than 50. This morning, the Cornell Daily Sun apparently agreed and reported that about 50 individuals walked out.

The local newspaper, on the other hand, blatantly exaggerated — read: lied — about the numbers of protesters (who they affectionately refer to as “dissenters”).

From the Ithaca Journal: 100 walk out on Ashcroft talk

To me, this is just the icing on a very pathetic cake. I was extraordinarily disappointed in the behavior of Cornell students and administration. I was not surprised, just disappointed.

Honestly, how mature are we here at one of the best educational institutions in the world? Haughty professors and students preach the merits of an academic environment where minds, hearts, and doors are open and any subject can be discussed calmly and politely. They pride themselves on fostering an atmosphere were individuals can speak and listeners can respond intelligently.

In light of that, what the hell happened last night? It was pathetic. It was embarrassing. I read an article last week about Colorado University’s similar actions toward Ashcroft. It’s good to know that the Cornell community is capable of acting in the same immature manner as a state school which must accept any Colorado high school graduate.

Way to go, Cornell.

If I had $350,000…

I would not spend it on this.

I’ve nothing against charity, just Mr. Clooney.

Laugh of the Day, and a Merry Christmas!

For now, we’ll ignore how odd it is that I’m taking the time to blog on Christmas Eve. This just made me laugh a little too much.

(and yes, I do feel a little dirty linking to DU)

Anyway, apparently this whole thing started at this WP blog, where my mom commented to defend the troops. Obviously, some libby was offended and took it to the DU. Seriously, cracks me up.

My favorites (for no obvious reason, haha):

“It is that picture of her though, and the disturbing thoughts about how mis-guided that little girl will probably end up as a result of her mother’s views. Very sad.”

“Let’s just hope the little girl starts thinking for herself soon and leaves her mother’s narrowmindedness far behind.”

Oh, if that doesn’t make for a Merry Christmas, I don’t know what does! Now, this “little girl” needs to get some sleep so she can wake up and open her presents in the morning. I’ve been writing Santa all year for a Barbie Dreamhouse and an Ann Coulter action figure to go with it!

“Totalitarianism Lives”

There was a column in the Cornell Daily Sun today titled “Totalitarianism Lives” by Angelika Byorth, a student at the University of Nebraska. Sometimes, when the Sun doesn’t have enough original material to publish, they resort to this “College Exchange” which I always assumed featured a column from some other college newspaper. However, although numerous google searches confirmed the existence of this “Angelika Byorth,” there was no evidence of the aforementioned column being published in Nebraska. If anyone can find it, I would be eternally grateful.

Why? Why, you might ask, is this certain column of such importance? Really, I am in awe. It is an amazing work of a mixture of complete incompetency and absolute ignorance. The whole article is actually quite poorly written - surprise! a liberal who isn’t the brightest bulb in the box! But it is definitely worth reading. Although, I would recommend not eating beforehand, I almost regurgitated my lunch.

Background (since I am not typing out this whole stupid mess for you): apparently this “student” is at least 50 years old. Jewish. Lived in Germany post-Holocaust, something something something. Tells a sad story about repression and oppression that I honestly thought would have a legitimate message until this point:

For decades I’ve tried to suppress painful memories of growing up in post-Holocaust Germany. I didn’t want to talk about 1957, when my family gave up house and home then fled with only five suitcases of personal belongings from the totalitarian regime in the former East Germany. I didn’t want to speak or write about the poverty, the food rationing, the hunger and the government intrusion into our lives.

But I must come forward about that part of my personal history, because I have been an eyewitness to what can happen when a once free society allows itself to slip into the nightmare of totalitarianism. I have seen it for real and, long before the year 1984 arrived, what George Orwell described in his book.

Unfortunately, I am seeing it happening right here in the U.S. today. You know the details: widespread wiretapping, checking on library records, taking away the rights of people who are suspected of terrorism, monitoring online communications, being treated like a criminal when traveling by airplane, torturing political prisoners, fighting war upon war, often with imperialistic motives, and the list goes on.

I ask that you pay attention to political matters and get involved. Adolph Hitler was elected by only 37 percent of the German people because the rest didn’t care to vote, preferring apathy. According to U.S. Census Bureau and Federal Election Commission statistics, President George W. Bush was elected in 2000 by only 27 percent of eligible American voters.

The numbers don’t lie. Bush was less popular than Hitler.

<Insert barfing here.>

Seriously, this is unbelievable. I think the main reason it stuck out to me was because lately the Sun has been running a couple very interesting columns about how the world’s treatment of Ahmadinejad’s actions is eerily similar to the way they handled (read: mishandled) Hitler leading up to World War II. The title of this Byorth’s piece of trash, “Totalitarianism Lives,” was misleading in that context. Especially from a Jewish perspective.

Give me a break! Is she even aware of her own implications? These people have no limits. At a time when the Jewish population ought to be far more concerned about insane Islamo-fascist dictators in the Middle-East, this idiot is comparing Bush to Hitler. Nay, she is actually implying that Bush is worse than Hitler.

Brilliant. Apparently, along with totalitarianism, stupidity thrives.
