Dr. Robert Schmidt gave a presentation to the Senate Human Resources and Education Committee last Friday on Career and Technical Education. His ideas, research, and plan have the badly needed substance and vision, which is so often lacking in the discourse regarding education in Nevada.
Norm Dianda, director of Nevada Policy Research Institute, and I spoke with Dr. Schmidt in support of his ideas. ACE charter school in Reno is a practical model that should be expanded systemically and statewide. Any of us who have taught overseas recognize the self-serving, idiosyncratic nature of American public education. Dr. Schmidt cites successful programs in other countries and applies the concepts to our situation in Nevada. His analysis for NPRI titled Teaching the Forgotten Half is a must read for anyone interested in reforming Nevada’s education system.
