Mandating Higher Insurance Premiums

Probably the biggest reason health insurance costs so much these days is all the frivolous lawsuits filed by ambulance chasers trying to make a quick buck. But another significant reason is all the government “mandates” which require insurance policies to include coverage for things such as acupuncture that many people don’t want or need. For example, why should a MAN be required to pay for maternity benefits?

This is something to keep in mind as Nevada legislators gather in Carson City next month. Already, according to the Associated Press, Sen. Dina “I’m Not Happy” Titus (D-Las Vegas) is sponsoring a bill REQUIRING insurance companies to cover a new cervical cancer vaccine. Sen. Bob Coffin (D-Las Vegas) is sponsoring a bill REQUIRING insurance companies to cover certain prostate cancer screening procedures. And Sen. Steven Horsford (D-Las Vegas) is sponsoring a bill REQUIRING hospitals and clinics to offer pregnant women AIDS testing. Those are all on top of all the other REQUIREMENTS already on the books.

I’m not saying these tests and screenings are bad. I AM saying that it’s bad for the government to REQUIRE private businesses to provide them at a cost which will only be passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher premiums. These “mandates” are nothing short of backdoor tax increases.

If the government wants these procedures covered, then propose that the government pay for it and let’s see if the citizens agree. Otherwise, let the consumer and the insurance company decide which coverages and policies are best for them and their families. All government mandates do is further drive the cost of health insurance through the roof.
