We can’t think of a better use of taxpayer money than to imprison those of our community who commit violent felonies and other serious crimes. But the state bureau of prisons is requesting almost $2 billion to build more prisons over the next eight years.
Two billion is a lot of dough, so even if you support prisons, you can’t help but ask how many people are being housed in those prison cells who have committed victimless crimes - such as marijuana possession and prostitution. And how many of those inmates are illegal aliens?
Before agreeing to $2 billion in new prison facilities, let’s assess how we’re using the existing ones.
