All the Governor’s Spending

Gov. Jim Gibbons’ proposed budget for the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services over the next two years calls for a hefty 20 percent increase in spending. And Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie (D-Reno), one to the most dependable barometers of all things liberal, is tickled pink. The Nevada Appeal reports that Leslie said “the big increase in the governor’s budget should give it a strong chance of passage.”

If Ms. Leslie is gah-gah over this budget, fiscal conservatives have to KNOW there’s something wrong with it. But if that’s not enough, get a load of this observation by Las Vegas Review Journal columnist Erin Neff…

“(Gov. Jim Gibbons’) proposed budget, nearly 18 percent bigger than the current spending plan passed by lawmakers and approved by Gov. Kenny Guinn in 2005, is…almost identical to what voters would have gotten if just four percent more had chosen Democrat Dina Titus in November.”

Indeed, if you review a fact sheet distributed by the governor’s office last week (“General Fund Operating Appropriations by Functional Area 2005-07 and 2007-09”), you’ll find the following…

* Spending for “Legislative/Judicial” - up 29.65 percent
* Spending on “Human Services” - up 22.63 percent
* Spending on “Public Safety” - up 29.13 percent
* Spending on “Infrastructure” - up 29.55 percent
* Spending on “Special Purposes Agencies” - up 37.86 percent

Sorry, but it just doesn’t sound to me like Gov. Gibbons’ budget is saving us any of the money Gov. Titus would have cost us.

  2. This is a great web site. I have some great web pages myself if you are interested to share. But I should not go on about my site too much, that is not fair, right?
