Remember that brouhaha which was stirred up over Republican Assemblyman Ty Cobb’s lone vote against the purely symbolic election of Democrat Barbara Buckley for Speaker?
Remember how Democrats called Cobb’s vote partisan, immature, uncivil and…just not done? Remember how Cobb’s own leader, Republican Assemblyman Garn Mabey, called Cobb’s vote “disappointing”? Remember how members of the Democrat Party and Mabey took Cobb “to the woodshed”? Remember all that?
Well yesterday, in another purely symbolic vote to recognize a group which was visiting the Legislature, a bi-partisan resolution designating February 21st as “E Clampus Vitus Day at the Nevada Legislature” was introduced by Republican Assemblyman Tom Grady. It was co-sponsored by 53 of the 63 members of the Legislature from both the Senate and the Assembly.
Of course, when you hear so many legislators whining about not having enough time to get the people’s business done in “only” 120 days, one has to wonder why they even waste their time on stuff like this.
But that’s not really the point in this case. Because instead of passing this routine, bi-partisan purely symbolic measure unanimously as is traditionally done, I’m told by two different sources that Democrat Assemblywoman Kathy McClain of Las Vegas voted against the GOP-introduced resolution.
So where is the outrage NOW?
Where are all the condemnations of partisanship? Where are the howls of indignation for such a show of incivility? Where is Barbara Buckley’s statement expressing “disappointment” in McClain’s disrespectful act? Where is the woodshed McClain will be taken to? Inquiring minds wanna know.
Or maybe there really ARE two different standards of conduct in the Legislature - one for Democrats, one for Republicans.
