In case you missed it, SB 141 was introduced this week which “Increases the rate of the tax on transfers of real property in certain counties to fund capital projects for the county school district.” In other words, a tax hike.
The bill is co-sponsored, at the behest of Washoe County government officials, by every member of the Washoe county delegation except one…
Freshman Assemblyman Ty Cobb (R-Reno).
Go figure. I guess it’s off to another trip to the woodshed, huh?
Most disheartening about this, however, is that among the co-sponsors is state Sen. Maurice Washington (R-Reno), a signer of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge who promised his constituents to “oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.” Clearly this is an effort to raise taxes. And clearly co-sponsoring the bill isn’t exactly “opposition.”
To make matters worse, this isn’t the first time that Sen. Washington broke his pledge to voters. Back in 2003 he voted for the largest tax hike in the state’s history. Disappointing, to say the least.
And speaking of tax hikers, not only is Sen. Dennis Nolan (R-Las Vegas) pushing the idea of putting a tax hike on next year’s ballot (The Nolan Tax) to pay for highway construction, he’s also requested a bill which “Provides for taxation of crude oil production in Nevada.” Huh?
And yes, Sen. Nolan also voted for the largest tax hike in the state’s history in 2003.
I guess once you get into the habit of supporting tax hikes, you just can’t get it out of your blood. You’ll tax anything.
