Skool Daze

Education “reformers” will do just about anything to “fix” our lousy public schools…EXCEPT, of course, give parents universal school choice so that they can send their child wherever the parent thinks will provide him or her the best education.

According to an Associated Press report yesterday, a public school in Cambridge, Massachusetts is mulling the notion of full-day school, meaning a full eight-hour school day. Which might be fine. Certainly something to at least take a look at.

But here’s the problem: Practice, itself doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

Think of it this way. Suppose you’re a baseball player. And suppose during practice for two hours every day you hold the bat by the wrong end. Will extending the amount of time you practice swinging at the pitch improve your results and prepare you to be a world-class major leaguer? Heck, no.

If the school your kid goes to is mediocre-to-lousy, extending the school day by two additional hours just means two additional hours of mediocre-to-lousy instruction.

School choice, school choice, school choice, school choice, school choice…

By the way, the teachers union hasn’t taken an official position on extending the school day, but says they might be OK with it as long as teachers are paid more money and can choose whether or not to work the extended hours.

And some people still think the union actually cares about the KIDS?
