Dennis the Tax Menace Strikes Again

Taxpayers are going to have to start referring to state Sen. Dennis Nolan as “Dennis the Tax Menace.”

First he trots out the notion of raising taxes via a ballot initiative for road construction. Next we discover he authored a bill this year to tax a non-existent oil industry in Nevada “in case” we ever get an oil industry in Nevada sometime in the future. And then yesterday I found out he wants to tax parents whose kids play high school sports!

The latest Nolan tax scheme was introduced last Wednesday as S.B. 284. It allows local school boards to charge “fees for the participation of pupils in organized athletic activities and sports.” According to Nolan’s bill, that includes kids who play “football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track and field.”

Oh, and the bill also contains an “appropriation not in the Executive Budget.” In other words…MORE SPENDING than the Governor requested.

Specifically, Nolan is asking state taxpayers to pony up new money “to establish a pilot program to reinstate athletic programs in the public middle schools and junior high schools.” I assume this is an effort to tax an even wider range of parents with kids who like to play sports.

Lovely.

And this guy calls himself a “Republican”?

You know the drill. Sen. Nolan’s email address is dnolan@sen.state.nv.us. The toll-free number to reach his office in Carson City is 1-800-995-9080. And don’t forget to tell him you read about this on a “cyberspace blog.” And please, keep the four-letter words to a minimum…no matter how abusive the senator might get in his responses to you.
