Acting Nevada Republican Party Chairman Paul Willis is digging in his heels and refuses to step aside and let Sue Lowden come in and take control of the party’s completely broke and broken operation. It’s starting to look like the GOP is gonna need dynamite to get him out of that chairman’s chair.
As the Nevada Republican Party continues to slide down the razorblade of political life, the fringe element is comin’ out in force just in time for spring. Led by party Secretary Carolyn “Crazy Aunt in the Basement” Mehring (said with all due warmth and affection, of course), the Loon Platoon is pressuring Willis to hang on to power. Not because it’s in the best interest of the party, but “just so Chuck Muth won’t have any the satisfaction.”
Great reason.
But let me set the record straight on this. Willis stepping aside and making room for Sue Lowden wouldn’t give me any particular satisfaction. I’ve known Paul for the better part of a dozen years. He’s a damn fine party soldier who deserves a LOT of credit for fighting in the grassroots trenches with little or no appreciation for many, many years. Personally, I like the guy…and always have. Still do.
But this isn’t about personal likes and dislikes. For all his virtues, Paul is simply ill-suited as chairman of the Nevada Republican Party under these circumstances. The brouhaha over whatever his relationship might have been with a brothel owner is secondary to the fact that the party is broke and already SIX MONTHS behind the Democrats in organizing our presidential caucus.
But instead of allowing Sue Lowden to jump in and FIX these problems ASAP, he’s clinging onto his 15 minutes of fame. That’s simply not good for the party. This isn’t personal. It’s business.
And it’s not just me. Republican state senator and former Nevada Republican Party Treasurer Bob Beers said today, “I’ve always had a cordial relationship with Paul Willis, but it’s time for Sue Lowden to take control of the party.”
Exactly. In fact, it’s way PAST time. This should have, and could have been done a month ago. Is the party going to give the Democrats yet ANOTHER month to move ahead of us organizationally and financially? Apparently so, if Mr. Willis and Aunt Carolyn have their way.
Makes no dif to me. If the Loon Platoon wants to continue driving the party to hell in a hand basket, fine. Quite often, the only way for some people to come to grips with a problem and accept reality is to first hit rock bottom. The Nevada GOP is almost there.
A couple more shovelfuls and they’ll be able to see China.
Paul Willis should have stepped aside and let Mrs. Lowden take charge over a month ago. Then none of this would be happening. Instead, a hard-working, loyal party soldier is going to end up with a tarnished image and disastrous legacy. He needs to stop this insanity before it gets even worse. He needs to tell Carolyn Mehring and the Loon Platoon to take a hike, and do what he’s always done in all the years I’ve known him; what’s in the best interest of the party.
And that’s to bring Sue Lowden in immediately.
Before she changes her mind.
Oops. It might be too late. Um, you better stay tuned tomorrow…
