Dragging Giuliani

Here might be the first indication that the Nevada GOP decision (which still has to be ratified this weekend by the full Central Committee) to move its presidential caucus up to January 19th next year will, indeed, bring more media focus and attention to our state.

The Washington Post ran a story today on an old story about former New York mayor and GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani dressing up in “drag” for a charity event 10 years ago. According to the post, Rudy “sauntered onto a stage wearing a platinum-blond wig, a face full of makeup, dainty white gloves and a frilly pink gown filled out in all the right places.”

The question the Post posed is how dressing up like a babe might affect Rudy’s chances in the early GOP primary states which are often dominated by social conservatives. And wouldn’t you know it, Nevada made it into the story…

In Nevada, another state with an early caucus, Republicans would be unfazed by the image of Giuliani in women’s clothing, said Heidi Smith, chairwoman of the Republican Party in Washoe County. Giuliani impressed Reno citizens in a campaign appearance there last month that included a trip to Costco during which he mingled with shoppers, posing for photographs and signing autographs. “That meant more than seeing him in drag,” Smith said. “If he wants to wear a dress, who cares?”

Not only is it good news that Nevada will be attracting so much more national media attention this campaign cycle, but that quote from Chairwoman Smith is, as they say, priceless. You go, Heidi!
