Belting Drivers

Almost everyone already wears their seat belt when behind the wheel of their car. But that’s not enough for the government-knows-best nannies.

Not satisfied with allowing cops to write you a ticket for not wearing your seatbelt if you’re pulled over for an actual traffic-related offense, Nevada senators voted this week to make not wearing a seat belt a PRIMARY offense (SB 42). That means if you’re driving under the speed limit in your own lane using your turn signals with all your taillights working properly, the cops would now be able to pull you over for something which endangers absolutely no one other than the driver of the car.

This law change gives government more power over the private lives of individual citizens who aren’t bothering anyone else or infringing on anyone else’s liberties. So naturally, the 11-10 vote must have been mostly Democrats voting to expand government power, right? Wrong.

Eight of the 11 votes for this bill were Republicans: Sens. Amodei, Hardy, Heck, Nolan (of course), Raggio, Rhoades, Townsend and Washington.

But if you’re a registered Republican, don’t criticize their vote. That would make you a “bad” Republican.
