SB 141 went down in flames yesterday. That’s the bill which would have raised the real estate transfer tax in Washoe County. But it turns out supporters weren’t happy with just hiking the transfer tax. So before the final vote, they tacked on TWO additional taxes, including a sales tax hike. Which resulted in the bill garnering only 8 votes in support. That’s the good news.
The bad news: Five of the eight votes were…REPUBLICANS.
Of course, a good Republican isn’t supposed to criticize elected Republicans when they vote for tax hikes like this, right former acting-Nevada GOP Chairman Willis?
The five Republican tax hikers were Sens. McGinness, Nolan (of course), Raggio, Rhoads and Townsend.
NONE of the five has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge…which reaffirms why it is SO important to get Republicans to sign it during campaign season. Although many Republicans talk the anti-tax hike talk while stumping for your votes, they sure don’t walk the anti-tax hike walk once re-elected. That’s why we want it IN WRITING.
Especially since even when they put their commitment in writing, some still break their word to the voters and the people of Nevada.
