No New Tax Highway Bill Passes in Assembly

Remember that proposal by Republican Jim Gibbons to fund highway construction with existing tax revenue which would be reallocated from the room tax and other sources rather than raise taxes? The one that Republican Assembly Minority Leader Garn Mabey said he wouldn’t “waste” one of his emergency bills on in order to get it introduced? The one that Mabey said wasn’t going anywhere?

Yeah, THAT proposal.

Well, Jon Ralston just reported that it passed the Assembly this afternoon by an overwhelming vote of 40-2! It now moves to the Senate for final passage.

And just who were the two fiscal liberals who voted against putting $1 billion toward highway construction WITHOUT raising taxes?

You won’t believe it (then again, you might).

Nope, it wasn’t Democrats Barbara Buckley and Sheila Leslie.

Nope, it wasn’t Democrats “Moose” Arberry and Bernie Anderson.

Nope, it wasn’t Democrats John Oceguerra and Bonnie Parnell.

It was…

Republican Assembly Minority Leader Garn Mabey and Republican Assemblywoman Frances Allen!

And some people STILL wonder why I supported Allen’s opponent in her GOP primary race last year, and why I think Garn needs to be ousted as “leader” as soon as this session ends?
