The No New Taxes Highway Bill

Gov. Jim Gibbons’ plan to raise $1 billion for highway construction projects with NO TAX HIKES was given final approval yesterday and now heads to the governor’s desk for his John Hancock.

And they said it couldn’t be done.

Only 3 Democrats voted against funding highway construction without raising taxes: Sens. Bob Coffin, Terry Care and Maggie Carlton.

Despite incessant carping about the bill; despite her refusal to participate in the press conference last week announcing the deal on this bill; and despite her threat that she had the votes to kill the bill, even Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus (D) ultimately voted for it.

Sen. Mike Schneider (D) was particularly perturbed with the notion of funding highway construction without raising taxes on SOMEBODY yesterday, even though he, too, ended up voting for the bill. But he left us with this warning: “’No taxes’ will come to an end next session,” the Bolshevik from Vegas declared.

Taxpayers who are happy today that Schneider and Company didn’t get the tax hikes they panted for this year, and who hope to keep it that way in the future, can help themselves by helping to end Sen. Schneider’s career in the Senate at the ballot box in 2008. Is there a “no new taxes” candidate in the house?

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that “Republican” Assembly Minority Leader Garn Mabey (a) initially refused to introduce the no-new-taxes highway construction bill on behalf of the governor, saying it was a “waste” because it didn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades of passing, and (b) was actually one of only two votes AGAINST the no-new-taxes highway construction bill (the other being “Republican” Assemblywoman Francis “Fancy Pants” Allen) in the Assembly.

Have I mentioned lately that once this session is over, Garn’s Gotta Go?
