Another Reason to Hate the Immigration Bill

Not that anyone really needs any more reasons to reject the president’s illegal immigration reform proposal currently being considered in the Senate - the amnesty provision is more than enough for most people - but now we find out the bill would introduce a measure of government wage control in the private marketplace, as well.

According to a recent paper by the Heritage Foundation, the Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007 (S. 1348) “creates a new category of Y visas for temporary immigrant guest workers,” and that “Companies must pay these workers the higher of two wages - the amount paid to similarly skilled employees or the prevailing competitive wage.”

Understand that this isn’t the government setting wages only for government construction projects. This would be the government setting wages for ALL employment anywhere in the country, public or private, if the employee happens to be a temporary immigrant guest worker. Which means private employers would be REQUIRED by the government to pay temporary immigrant guest workers higher wages than they might currently be paying citizens working at market wage rates.

Let me predict what would happen should this provision be enacted into law: (A) Employers would stop hiring temporary immigrant guest workers rather than pay wages higher than the market demands, and/or (B) Employers would break the law and pay temporary immigrant guest workers “under the table” in order to avoid the government-mandated wage levels.

Yeah, this really helps solve the current problem, doesn’t it?

  1. Mandatory minimum wage provisions never adequately protected Americans from foreign competition. In fact is damaged their ability to remain employed in any kind of a capacity to compete with foreign workers. NAFTA gave American manufacturers a real reason to look south of our Border to expand and create incredible opportunities to compete by removing the productivity of America. This failed Amnesty bill contained a tail end provision to complete the NAFTA Superhighway through mid America furthering the ability of American companies and producers to compete in the international or “global” economy. Congress has gotten away with supporting the “rule of law” designed to destroy America that today may be a whole new day. The public said enough is enough. People are tired of having their Social Security benefits decreased, taxed, and forced to pay premiums after their maximum benefits have accrued only to have Congress give it away to illegal alien felons who never contributed a dime. I don’t give a damn what party you belong to, or who you support in the future. But please support elected officials who support America and Americans! One of our founding fathers said, when government takes away one fundamental right successfully, they will be back tomorrow to take the rest of them away. That 300 year statement, like our Constitution still holds true today.
