How to Handle a Problem Like Ann Coulter?

Two years ago at the annual conservative CPAC conference in Washington, columnist and TV personality Ann Coulter stirred up a hornet’s nest by referring to Muslims in her remarks as “ragheads.” She followed that up at this year’s CPAC by referring to Democrat presidential candidate John Edwards as a “faggot.”

This week the blond lightning rod has political pundit tongues wagging over her statement that she wished Edwards would get “killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”

Aside from the fact that Coulter is helping the Edwards campaign raise more money by using her comments to their advantage, such rhetorical bombast sucks all the air out of the national media debate, detracting from conservatives trying to get their message out.

Today, for example, instead of talking about conservative opposition to the Senate immigration bill, everybody’s talking about Annie. And instead of talking about the record-breaking attendance at CPAC earlier this year, and the messages from all the GOP presidential candidates who spoke there, everybody was talking about Annie.

More often than not, I love reading Coulter’s columns, and quote her regularly in my newsletter; however, she just doesn’t know where and when to stop. She goes too far. She gets to the edge of the cliff…and jumps, taking the conservative movement with her.

Some continue to cheer her on no matter how far over the line she might go, while others think she is now doing more harm than good. I think I’m falling into the latter camp. Unfortunately.

  1. I think Ann needs a boyfriend.

  2. Ann Coulter in nothing but a Paris Hilton with brains. Let her talk, she does it with humor not hate like Rosie does. The ultra consevatives have become so uptight and have so much starch in their collars that they’ve lost their sense of humor.

  3. Ann Coulter has a great sense of humor. She was spoofing lefty Bill Maher’s comments about wishing Vice President Dick Cheney getting blown up by terrorists as a way to end the war. Not only is she funny, but she gets right to the point, and that is very refreshing in the political correct world. Go Annie!

  4. The spin on the evening news was despicable. They quoted only Ann saying she only wishes John Edwards was killed by a terrorist. They did not include the first half of the sentence, with Ann saying she was quoting Bill Maher.

  5. That’s not really what she said. See for yourself: http://www.breitbart.tv/html/2258.html. She was actually making a point about Bill Maher’s comment that the Vice President should be killed in a terrorist attack — and, in the future, maybe she should just say this about Edwards. (Since the former was OK, why isn’t the latter?)

  6. First off, I agree with Mr. Bauer..although I think Ann might have a tough time (ditto Debbie Schlussel). And while what she said may have been taken out of context, with Ann Coulter, it’s not about helping the “movement” so much as it’s about Ann Coulter getting as much attention face time as she can. That’s the way it’s always been with her.

  7. Too bad if they left can’t take what they dish out. Ann, you go girl!

  8. ann must have a new book coming out…

  9. Ann tells it like it is, naturally the country club Republicans hate that as much as the Democrats.
