Goldwater-esque Platform

Earlier this year, Rep. Charlie Norwood, Georgia Republican, died. A special election to fill his seat came down to two Republicans: a sitting state senator, Jim Whitehead, who won the multi-candidate primary with 44 percent of the vote over the underdog Paul Broun’s 21 percent. But in the run-off, in which both Democrats AND Republicans got to vote, Broun scored a stunning upset win last week. Get this 4-Point platform he ran on and won with:

As your Congressman, I will apply a four-way test to all legislation:

1. Is it constitutional and a proper function of government?
2. Is it morally correct?
3. Is it something that we really need?
4. Is it something that we can afford?

It’s more than ironic that it too an outsider to come up with this winning platform against the establishment Republican candidate. If the GOP is to get its electoral groove back nationally, perhaps it should this page from CONGRESSMAN Broun’s playbook.
