Stuffed into the Senate Transportation/HUD appropriations bill are pork projects which include $1 million for a pedestrian and bike path in Louisiana (Landrieu), $3 million for hiking and bike trails in Illinois (Durbin and Obama), $200,000 for a parking garage in Provo, Utah (Hatch), $200,000 to convert an old post office into a museum in Las Vegas (Reid), $200,000 to convert an old bank in Suffolk, Virginia, into a museum (Warner and Webb), $250,000 to construct a museum to promote economic development and tourism in downtown Peoria, Illinois (Durbin), and $200,000 for the establishment of a multicultural museum in Beckley, West Virginia (Byrd).
How any of that money prevents more American bridges from collapsing is anyone’s guess.

Bush is so right on this issue; the first step is not to increase the gas tax, it is for Congress to realistically prioritize spending on a needs analysis of our infastructure needs and not use the money as a voting “bribe” or as a jobs program!
