Exit Rove, Stage Right

Karl Rove is leaving the White House. What a sad, sad day for the Left and the Democrats…but I repeat myself repeat myself. Now all they have left to kick around is Alberto Gonzales. And, of course, President Bush himself. Oh, and the troops in Iraq. But Rove was always their favorite target.

“Mr. Rove is no Merlin or Rasputin, as much as liberals and some reporters want to believe it,” editorialized the Wall Street Journal today. “He is above all a George Bush man. His rare mastery of history, demographics and policy made him a formidable political force, and we suspect it is his success far more than his methods that infuriates his critics.”

“Karl Rove changed history,” writes Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform and co-host of the upcoming Conservative Leadership Conference in the Washington Post today. “He managed four campaigns that will define America for a generation. None of these campaigns was easy or obvious, and that is why Rove will rightfully be remembered for his role in American politics.”

“The most useless speculation in Washington is who might replace Karl Rove at the White House,” writes columnist Robert Novak this morning. “He is genuinely irreplaceable. Nobody will attempt to combine the political and policy functions as Rove has done.”

Yes, the Left will sorely miss Karl Rove. But if they keep their fingers crossed, maybe they’ll be lucky enough to get Newt Gingrich back again soon!
