In the September 20, 2007 edition of Jon Ralston’s “Flash” newsletter, he reported the following:
“State insiders are abuzz about a bizarre paint job (at) the (governor’s) mansion where someone decided it was a good idea to paint over spirit man Larry Ruvo’s name that is emblazoned on a stateroom where events are held. You can still read the name, but it is now hardly visible from the street.”
I’m not sure who’s responsible for the paint job, or the reasoning behind this unfortunate decision, but at this point it doesn’t matter. Gov. Gibbons should take immediate action to return Mr. Ruvo’s name above the entrance of the stateroom to its former prominence.
What many of you may not know is that the Governor’s Mansion was in a deplorable, barely livable condition in the late 1990s. Section 8 housing was in better shape.
Well, Citizen Ruvo - a well-known and highly-respected Nevada philanthropist - took it upon himself to lead the effort of not only repairing and refurbishing this important state landmark for future governors and generations of Nevadans, but he helped raise millions of dollars in private funds, not taxpayer funds, to pay for it. He also personally contributed hundreds or thousands of dollars toward the project out of his own pocket.
When all was said and done, Mr. Ruvo’s efforts helped make Nevada’s Governor’s Mansion the envy of many across the United States. Acknowledging his generosity and commitment with bold, brass lettering above the entrance of the stateroom adjoining the mansion doesn’t even come close to expressing the gratitude many of us feel for his efforts in this regard.
So yes, we hope the Governor will direct those responsible to correct the “paint job” over Mr. Ruvo’s name and extend to him the state’s sincere apology and regret for this unfortunate incident.
