Nevada GOP Tidbits

What with our big 2007 Conservative Leadership Conference this past weekend in Reno/Sparks, I’m a bit behind in my Nevada political writing. So let’s get back into the swing of things right now.

Clark County Republican Party Chairman John Hambrick issued a press release today (which he failed to send to the state’s conservative bloggers) announcing that he will be running for the Nevada State Assembly next year in the district currently being poorly represented by former Assembly Minority Leader Garn “Maybe” Mabey.

The problem is, while Mabey has been ousted as Minority Leader, I don’t believe he has formally announced that he’s not running for re-election yet. Then again, knowing what a paragon of indecisiveness Mabey has been in his political career, perhaps Hambrick wisely just decided to give him a little push.

And in unrelated news, rumors circulate that liberal Republican Assemblywoman Francis “Fancy Pants” Allen is mulling a run for the Clark County Commission next year - which is about the best news taxpayers in her assembly district could possibly get. It’s like an early Christmas present.

But the Clark County Commission is the major leagues and WAY over Allen’s head. My bet is that when push comes to shove she chickens out and just runs for her old assembly seat again.

Sorry, District 4.

And finally, the fate of Nevada Republican Party executive director Zac Moyle is uncertain after being arrested in Beatty on a failure to appear arrest warrant dealing with a speeding ticket he failed to pay almost a year ago in Fernley. Moyle has since paid the ticket but is reportedly being put on suspension while the GOP decides what to do with him.

In an ideal world, the incident would be a minor blip that wouldn’t cost the ED his job. But we’re talking about the political world here. And the fact is every time Moyle tries to represent the party here in Nevada from this point forward, the Democrats are going to bring the incident up and wrap him around the neck of every Republican candidate on the campaign trail. And it’s only a matter of time before someone photo-shops his suit-and-tie into prison stripes.

In addition, Moyle is also a victim of lousy timing. Jack Abramoff is still on everybody’s mind, not to mention former Reps. Cunningham and Foley, as well as Sens. Vitter and Craig. As minor as the offense may have been, it just hands additional “culture of corruption” fodder to Harry Reid and the Nevada D’s.

As unfair as it may be, Moyle needs to do what’s right for the party, forget the suspension, turn in his resignation and get on with his life as an ex-executive director. As an ex-ex myself, I can attest that his life will actually begin to improve almost immediately. A talented and well-liked guy like Zac Moyle will surely land on his feet.
