Religion, Politics & the Huckster

A REPUBLICAN HILLARY CAN BEAT: “If you are the eventual Democratic nominee for President in 2008, who would you like to run against? Answer: A Republican you can beat. . . . Why is the liberal National Education Association of New Hampshire coming out for Hillary Clinton on the Democratic side and Mike Huckabee on the Republican side?” - Columnist Douglas MacKinnon

ARKANSAS DOESN’T GET WORLD NEWS?
“I really wasn’t aware of a lot of the issues that exist between Cuba and the United States. Being in Arkansas, that’s not something that there’s a close proximity of.”

- GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee explaining why he strongly supported lifting sanctions on Cuba when he was governor of Arkansas, but has flip-flopped on the issue now that he’s running for president, Fox News, 12/10/07

THE AUTHENTIC HUCKSTER

“(Mike Huckabee’s new immigration) ad, airing in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, fails to mention that the former Arkansas governor praised President Bush’s legislation, which provided a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. It also ignores his proposal to grant in-state college tuition to some high-achieving students whose parents were in the country illegally… Huckabee also opposed an Arkansas measure to deny public services to illegal immigrants and said last year that some critics of such immigrants are ‘driven by just sheer racism.’

“By focusing solely on the border-security part of the debate–and even omitting his own proposal for making illegal immigrants return to their home countries and reapply for admission–Huckabee is fudging his record and trying to cast himself as what an on-screen graphic calls an ‘authentic conservative.’”

- Columnist Howard Kurtz

THE MITT-MIKE RELIGIOUS WAR

“Four weeks before New Hampshire and three weeks before the Iowa caucuses, the Republican race has become a proxy religious war. . . . (T)he Baptist preacher (Mike Huckabee) has implied that Mormonism may be a cult and is running as the Christian conservative, i.e., God’s, candidate. This is not the wonkish stuff of which so much politics is now made. This is high-voltage, and faith and morality are likely to be major issues in political debate in the weeks between now and the first engagements of 2008.”

- Columnist Pat Buchanan

HAIL TO THE MINISTER-IN-CHIEF

“The reason we have so much government is because we have so much broken humanity. And the reason we have so much broken humanity is because sin reigns in the hearts and lives of human beings instead of the Savior. . . . I didn’t get into politics because I thought government had a better answer. I got into politics because I knew government didn’t have the real answers, that the real answers lie in accepting Jesus Christ into our lives. . . . I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ.”

- Then-Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas at a Southern Baptist convention back in 1998, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 6/8/98

RAISING THE RELIGION QUESTION

“The surfacing of the ‘religion question’ in the Republican presidential primary campaigns of both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee has raised important issues and exposed much public confusion about the intersection of religion and politics. . . . Huckabee is perfectly within his rights to hold himself out as a Christian. Voters are perfectly within their rights to evaluate what that means. I just hope that fellow Christian conservatives will look beyond the label and not blindly support a Christian candidate who might be way more Christian than conservative. We shouldn’t have to choose between the two.”

- Columnist David Limbaugh

THE LORD AS A CHEAP POLITICAL GIMMICK

“Maybe (GOP presidential candidate Mike) Huckabee thinks he’s ‘invincible’ because he has literally inferred that God wants him to win. ‘It’s the same power,’ he said of his sudden rise in the polls, ‘that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves of bread feed a crowd of 5,000 people.’ Okay.

“There have been reports that Huckabee recently told a Pastor that God speaks to him. In recounting all of this to an Evangelical friend of mine, the friend responded, ‘The tiny man who runs Iran and wants to wipe the United States and Israel off the face of the earth, also says God speaks to him. No Christian should use the Lord as a cheap campaign gimmick.’”

  1. Chuck,
    While I have not ruled out Huckabee yet, there are a number of things that give me pause. But I have problems with all the candidates. My concern about Romney is not his religion directly, but about the way blacks feel about his religion and wonder if he is still influenced by the anti-black theology in Momonism that was officially repealed only in the 1970’s. My number one issue is and will remain: who will best protect America from Radical Islam?

    David

  2. Thank you for putting all these comments together in one place. I’m truly concerned about the swelling support for Mike Huckabee, given his record, which is far from my values. Actually, I find Mike Huckabee rather frighening. If indeed he succeeds in being the Republican nominee, he will be torn to shreds in the general election.

  3. Mike Huckabee Is not a conservative. He voted for tax increases in Arkansas, he paroled a convicted rapist who subsequently killed a former girlfriend. and he supports government supported health care!

  4. I think Huckabee is a mix of Sharpton and Jackson - pulpit bullies with no grounded morals of their own.

  5. I realize that Duncan Hunter is what we used to call a dark horse candidate, but as a a veteran of lots of elections I have seen many candidates come and go, some I must admit I wish had been elected. This is the case with Duncan Hunter, he’s one I’d like to see elected.

    Hunter is a 28 year Reagan Republican Congressman with a pretty solid and outspoken record even when the White House or the Socialist left are dishing out their worst, Duncan Hunter stands his ground. Go to Hunter’s website for direct access to issues, of importance www.gohunter08.com

    Based on positions; I am most favorable to Congressman Duncan Hunter over all the rest in the race. He is solid on all the basic issues that matter most to me. I like his positions on Immigration, Troops, Taxes, Trade, Family, and Life and other important issues.

    Having met, listened to and researched Congressman Hunter’s background and positions, I have decided to support his candidacy in this Presidential race.

    Some of Hunter’s profile for consideration:
    * A + National Rifle Association
    * 100% Eagle Forum
    * 100% National Right to Life
    * 92% Lifetime Rating, American Conservative Union
    * 100% Concerned Women for America
    * 100% Christian Coalition
    * 100% Campaign for Working Families

    * Veterans Issues count with Duncan Hunter. Hunter is a Vietnam Veteran, having served with the 173 Airborne and 75th Army Rangers, Son of a WW2 Marine and Father of an OIF/OEM Marine.

    I found Hunter to be an excellent candidate. It is bothersome that his poll numbers are not high yet, but I am convinced if more knew of him and his positions, they would support him. I am a local precinct captain and an alternate delegate. I will be talking up Hunter’s campaign now through the Caucus and into the 2008 campaign. If he does not make it in the GOP primary process, I may switch my registration to Constitutionalist Party and support who ever they nominate.

    Sincerely

  6. Rick, you’re looking at the right candidate in Duncan Hunter.

    Just for comparison:

    Ron Paul was never able to get one piece of his legislation through the process. He was a failure as a legislator.

    Here’s where the Paul small government argument breaks down.

    In a ten year period Ron CO SPONSORED 1876 bills written by other people. That’s 1000 more than Duncan Hunter. Now if you believe those 1876 bills were all to decrease government (remember written by others who Paul supporters say NEVER lower government!) , I don’t know what to tell you.

    Ron Paul has proved he can’t ‘govern’. He has a zero record of accomplishments, except for pushing 1876 bills others wrote through congress. Small government guy?

    Just for comparison of actual accomplishments in congress:

    Sponsored means he wrote or introduced the bill. Co sponsors signs on and supports bills written by someone else.

    Statistics: Duncan Hunter has sponsored 105 bills since Jan 7, 1997, of which 72 haven’t made it out of committee (Average)

    and 10 were successfully enacted (Good, relative to peers).

    Hunter has co-sponsored 894 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers).

    Now take a look at Ron Paul, who claims many ‘accomplishments’ and would never vote for any frivolous, unconstitutional bill!

    Statistics: Ronald Paul has sponsored 346 bills since Jan 7, 1997, of which 341 haven’t made it out of committee (Extremely Poor) and 0 were successfully enacted .(Average, relative to peers).

    Paul has co-sponsored 1876 bills during the same time period (Average, relative to peers) NOTE: 1876 bills, written by other congress members. All ‘constitutional’ ? You decide.

    One of the stranger pieces of legislation that Paul Co sponsored would have kept him out of the debates!!

    . H.CON.RES.263 : Expressing the sense of Congress that any Presidential candidate should be permitted to participate in debates among candidates if at least 5 percent of respondents in national public opinion polls of all eligible voters support the candidate’s election for President or if a majority of respondents in such polls support the candidate’s participation in such debates. Sponsor: Rep Jackson, Jesse L., Jr. [IL-2] (introduced 11/6/2001) Cosponsors (2)

    See some of Paul’s CO sponsored legislation here:

    Take note of the ultra liberal socialists in congress he signed on with.
