Sky-High Salary U

The Nevada System of Higher Education has been of no help to me whatsoever; nevertheless, I’ve been able to uncover some new information on the salaries being paid to some of the upper echelon of Chancellor Jim Rogers’ education kingdom anyway. While unable to obtain the actual names of the individual workers, the list includes the position title and the school where they work, making some identities self-evident.

Let’s start today with just the folks in this taxpayer-funded public university system who not only make six figures from the state’s general fund budget, but whose six figure income starts with a two or higher. Note, these figures are just the base salary, not counting fringe benefits and other supplemental income these folks might be receiving from other sources, such as university foundations, etc.

Also, while perusing this list, remember that the governor’s salary is $144,000 a year, and the median household income for the average Nevada worker is around $51,000. And to put this in just a little more perspective for the average taxpayer who is being asked for higher taxes for the university system, a salary of $200,000 a year comes to about $4,000 per WEEK. It takes the average Nevada taxpayer a MONTH to pull down that kind of dough. With that, feast your eyes on this…

Exactly what are the duties of a “To Be Determined” employee making over $200K a year?

Now, if you just cut the above-listed salaries by 5 percent, almost every one of these folks would STILL be making over $200,000 a year. But the combined savings would be well over $300,000…which would be MORE than enough to keep all the rural Western Nevada Community College campuses open.

But there’s nothing to cut in the university system budget, though, right Chancellor Rogers?

“But these people have contracts.” Really? Then it’s time to re-negotiate.

Oh, and by the way, there are an additional 857 university system employees pulling down $100,000 a year or more, including ASSISTANT professors, ASSOCIATE deans, a community college chief of police (why a community college needs a chief of police is anyone’s guess), a community college counselor and even a half-dozen LIBRARIANS!

And at the Western Nevada Community College, where President “Chicken Little” said last week she’d have to close all her rural campuses to save $284,000…she has not one, not two, but THREE vice presidents carrying her books and taking her clothes to the cleaners who are hauling in $141,325 EACH. The president herself is raking in $186,648 of taxpayer dough. Not even to run a university, but a COMMUNITY COLLEGE!

Again, Gov. Jim Gibbons - responsible for running the ENTIRE state, including the university system - makes $144,000 a year.

Did I mention all this is for the PUBLIC taxpayer-funded university system? Maybe if these folks want to pull in these kinds of salaries and benefit packages, they should try competing in the private sector. And maybe it’s time to get rid of tenure. And maybe it’s time to re-evaluate the amount of taxpayer money going to fund sports and entertainment in this publicly-funded system of “higher education.” You think?

  1. governor not repsonsible for ‘entire state’. Regents repsonsible for heigh ed.

Governor doesn’t require a college ed all the positions above do.

  2. You think a college education makes you smarter, more efficient, more productive than the rest of us? Get real. Some of the dumbest, least productive people I know have degrees up the ying-yang. Just take a look at the Nevada State Board of Education.

And yes, the governor IS responsible for higher ed. The regents can’t oversee a dime of funding that the governor doesn’t put in his budget and get approved by the Legislature.

  3. The Dean of the School of Journalism does NOT have a PhD….and gets paid what?

This thread should be seeing some action now that employees raises are vulnerable. Sorry Chuck and Bob (Beers, that is), but the rank and file state worker negotiated through their representitives a raise which should have the force of, and in fact is, an equitable contract. For the little guys to take a hit now is much more devastating than the administrators not getting any raise when you’re talking about disposable income vs basic needs.

The difference is that the administrators get a hard contract with COLAs built in, and most are 4%….plus they get merit along with many other bennies. The Grade 29 secretary who has to come up with $360/yr to park is feeling a far greater pinch than the VP making $150k/yr…..for the same parking space.

Unlike higher ups, classified don’t get a break in tuition for their kids. I know Bob’s position is basically ” If you don’t like your job, then leave.”…but it’s just not that simple. More importantly though, the university is alienating the very people who are on the ground making the place run, and are the immediate face the public, and the students, see.
