Every time you turn around there’s a story in the paper with someone on the Left slamming the “devastating” cuts Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons is implementing and/or a calls for him to break the “no new taxes” pledge he made to the voters of Nevada before they elected him. But with the notable exception of state Sen. Bob Beers and some valiant college Republicans at UNR, all we’re hearing from Republicans in defense of the governor’s fiscal policies is the sound of silence.
What are Nevada Republicans waiting for, a written invitation to engage in this important political debate?
The very glue which binds Republicans who differ widely on many social issues is the bread-and-butter issue of taxes-and-spending. Jim Gibbons is doing EXACTLY what Republicans across the country say they want an elected Republican to do: hold the line on taxes and cut spending. They should be crawling out of the woodwork to support him at this critical time.
But…nothing.
Barely a peep. No press releases. No written statements. No letters. No resolutions. No nothing.
If the GOP can’t muster any enthusiasm even for cutting spending and holding the line on taxes, is it no wonder so many of us have left the party?

I send letters that the RJ will not publish. The SUN publishes me about 2 times a month as they love to print rebuttals.
I foung out that when I refer to Senator Reid as ‘Ol Hands Up Harry’ they will not print me! I wonder why?
Ms Titus and the RJ acted to destroy Gov. Gibbons and prevent his election. Ewen though they failed, they continue to ’snipe’ and ‘deride’ anything he does. Could it be that there are a few Secular Progressive Liberals on the staffs of both the RJ as well as the SUN?
If you visit my website www.DesertConservative.com, you may get a bit of information as to my way of viewing our political situation.
Thanks for the opportunity to make my thoughts known.
… comments in the on-line R-J comment section (12/18/2007) about Lincoln County’s school spending was enlightening. Seems Linclon County has to cut $500,000 due to the budget cut, but they are giving pay incentives and buying early retirement for their administrators and teachers like crazy!, and that ain’t cheap.
If I recall, their general administration and school administration consumed fully 20% of the districts budget. Further, the paid benefits for general administration personnel was 116% of the amount spent on salaries!!!
Oh, then there was the field trip to St. George Utah for the “Parade of Homes” and field trips for cheerleaders and on and on………
Short story seemed to be that they pissed away more than $500,000.
