Super-Duper Tuesday Is Here!

The Democrats are lucky. They have two viable candidates who will be slugging it out and making their cases and getting themselves on record on a host of issues in the next few weeks. Their contest almost assuredly won’t be over today.

On the other hand, many Republicans, including John McCain, think John McCain already has the GOP nomination sown up - or will by the end of the day. And that’s a shame. Now that the race has been narrowed to two viable candidates, I’d have liked to have seen several weeks of head-to-head competition between McCain and Mitt Romney like the one-on-one contest now going on between She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and Obama. (Sorry Huckleberry-Ron fans; it is what it is.)

But thanks to the party establishment pooh-bahs who set the stage for today’s virtual national primary - something else Republicans can thank George W for, as his “peeps” are the ones who blocked a plan for a rotating regional primary system at the 2000 Republican National Convention - the fat lady appears ready to sing. And the phantom of this opera appears to be St. John of McCain.

I still think Obama has a shot, but the Clinton machine still has to be seen as the odds-on favorite to eventually take home the gold. So next November’s election is really going to put conservatives in a pickle. Do they once again hold their nose and vote for a seriously-flawed Republican nominee just to keep an even worse Democrat, Bill’s wife, out of the Oval Office? What will YOU do?
