Nevada Democrat Party Chairwoman Jill Derby announced yesterday that she was going to run against Republican Rep. Dean Heller again this year for the 2nd congressional seat in rural/northern Nevada. I literally happened to be in the neighborhood at the time and stopped by to witness the official press conference announcement.
I have to say I applaud the highly partisan Democrat leader for being willing to fall on her sword once again as her party’s sacrificial lamb against Congressman Heller. However, instead of holding the press conference in the Reno office of some architectural firm, the more appropriate venue would have been across the street in the neighborhood funeral home, as this challenge is DOA - dead on arrival.
Derby’s announcement was full of the standard Democrat boiler-plate rhetoric. In that regard there was absolutely nothing newsworthy about the announcement whatsoever.
Following the now-requisite Obama rhetoric, Derby invoked the word “change” at least a half dozen times, thereby under-cutting the very essense of her claim that she, not Heller, would be independent…like me and Nevada. As if she wouldn’t toe to Nancy Pelosi’s line every step of the way if by some miracle she actually got elected.
But I found the most amusing part of Derby’s speech - other than reports that one of the students she used as window dressing behind her as she made the big announcement was an illegal alien attending UNR on a Millennium Scholarship - was how she blamed Dean Heller for…global warming.
This on a day when snow tires were required to drive into Reno.
In any event, I guess the only thing better than beating Jill Derby once for Congressman Heller will be the opportunity to beat her a second time. And something tells me this beating is going to be a lot more severe.
Party on, Garth.
